'93-'99 Lincoln MarkVIII
To continue the discussion from another thread...
I did a bit of research and was suprised at the power these cars had. And the car is seriously pimp! Long, low and smooth, what a great cruiser shape. The interior is funky too.

Check out this review...
quote:

http://www.newcartestdrive.com/98/lux/98mark8.cfm
"The 4.6-liter V8 engine on the standard Mark VIII delivers 280 horsepower and 285 pound-feet of torque. It comes with four valves per cylinder (32 valves) and double overhead-cams (four cams).
A slightly more powerful version of the same engine is used in the LSC that puts out 290 horsepower. That power provided a burly burst of acceleration in all situations, from standing starts to critical highway-passing scenarios. In cruise mode, it was smooth and quiet."

Going by MSN and Epinions ratings, people who have these cars absolutely love them. A mint '99 can be had for around $17k. That's a lot of car for the money.
So I know at least one person on the vortex has one. Anyoen else want to chime in?

Re: '93-'99 Lincoln MarkVIII (Sporin)

The later ones ('96 and newer I believe) with the facelifted front end look a lot better, but they are fairly rare. I don't see these around often. You're right though, they are cheap. A lot of bang for the buck. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Very sweet. I love that the whole car drops almost 2" when you get above 50 MPH. ...and I thought my spoiler was cool.

what a great cruiser. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
my old neighbor has a mkvii and it still runs great, and is a timeless design, imo.

My dad had a 93, it was pretty quick, does low 7s to 60. Had more than his share of problems (surprise surprise), but he still liked the car.
Anyone remember the commercial for these where the driver slowly creeps up to a horizontal bar that isjust lower than the top of the roof.... then backs up and accelerates full blast, just ducking the bar (because of the lowered suspension). cool!
I used to work at a garage, and we put one of these on the hoist... Some computer function of the car didn't like being lifted, and when we put the car down, the suspension was lowered.... and we couldn't get it off the lift!

Great story. I've got a buddy who was a car porter for a Lincoln dealer in northern Illinois who put an early 90's Continental on a lift without first disengaging the similiar suspension. The cars wheels reached for the ground as it was being lifted and once it was put back down, there were 8" gaps between the wheels and the fenders. My buddy was instructed to drive it around until it settled down. He picked me up at my house and we took the car and our girlfriends to the beach. Lots o' fun.

Correction...93-98 Mark VIIIs. No Marks made in 99.
It is a great car for performance and luxury and the price makes it a shoe-in. You can find a good, low mileage 96LSC for under $10K. The 96 LSC was the first M8 with HID headlamps. The styling changed in 97, but for some reason the first gen cars are faster. I am part of a Mark VIII club that has over 360 paid members.
The air suspension can be a blessing and a curse. It is a common complaint from owners with 100K mile Marks. I have become the resident Air-Suspension guru on our Mark VIII board and I talk to someone EVERY WEEK who has a problem with their Air-Suspension. My car is fast bagged and remotely operated so that makes it a real blessing for me. I believe I have the only "fast-bagged" M8 in existance (so far).
The car actually only drops 20mm at 105kmh (~63mph), but I can make it do anything you like at any speed. It raises 20mm when you get in and drops 20 mm when the last door is shut so the "parked" height is the same as the "freeway" height.
I could go on forever so I'll just stop now and post some pics.

97 Mark VIII (second gen) and a 5.4L Mark VIII

96LSC (First gen)

A guy in our club running 11s on with a built motor, Vortec and a customized but factory EFI.

Re: '93-'99 Lincoln MarkVIII (Bibs)

You need to turn the air-ride switch off whenever the wheels leave the ground, or whenever it is jacked up by means of a hydraulic jack. What happens is that the car senses it is too high and tries to adjust by letting air out of the bags, since it can't drop because of the jack, it eventually will vent all of the air out of the bags and the car will be SLAMMED.
Start the car and it will begin raising, but it may error and shut off if it is not able to lift the car to "trim" height within 90 seconds (it should be able to). Turn the car back off for a few seconds and it will attempt to bring the car to trim height again. The system is active for one hour after the car was shut-off, after the one hour time window has passed, the computer shuts down.
