My brother's 94 Golf has had issues a-plenty, but we've been able to solve most of them till now.
The transmission is stuck in 2nd gear. When you put it in Drive, it starts in 2nd (at least I think it's second...) and stays there no matter what. If you move the shifter to 3 or 2, nothing changes. If you move it to 1, it downshifts, but it won't ever start in 1st.
I don't know if the PRNDL lights are malfunctioning because the whole cluster is f'ed. The tach and speedo are dead, seems like it's time for a new cluster from searching the interwebs. So I don't know if the indicators would respond right even if the trans was functioning correctly.
I get the feeling this is not an isolated problem, but I can't seem to figure out which problem is mine, as some of the solutions are for tip transmissions or otherwise different transmissions from the one in my bro's Golf.
Short and sweet version:
Car: 94 Golf III GL, lolomatic
