Re: A/C & Heat work as well on TDI as gas cars? (spongebob_squarepants)

No effect on a/c since that's driven by a compressor off the engine which is the same thing gas or diesel.
You live in Arizona, what are you asking about cold for???
but seriously, the only real difference is that if it's well below freezing, the engine will not reach operating temperature at idle. Some people seem to like starting their engine to get the interior warm before actually driving off. This doesn't work on a TDI. I don't do that, I jump in and go, and if there's load on the engine from driving, it warms up fine.
If it's -20 C, and you have the heater on full blast, and you get stuck in traffic to the point of hardly moving, I've had the temperature gauge go *down*.

The heater takes more time because diesel engines warm up more slowly.
Idling any engine to warm it up is bad for it (drive gently instead, since it will warm up faster), but it is especially true with diesel engines, since they won't warm up at all at idle.
The air conditioning is fine, though I am not in as warm an area as you are. Certainly better than in an old Volvo (great heater, wimpy air conditioner, perfect for Sweden, I suppose).

As a resident of Mesa, do I really need to worry about heater capacity???

Mr. Squarepants, the AC cranks on both of our cars and I sense you really don't need to worry about the heater and how slowly it warms up.
(Bob, the AC is so effin' cold on both of our cars, I have to dial in some heat even on the hottest of days...otherwise it gets too cold.
Neither of the systems on our cars has ever been re-charged.)

<<America is about to understand the power of the TDI !
Bob, buy the car and stop worrying !

Yeah, like it's ever too cold here in Mesa AZ....

Okay, I got the TDI today! Cool White with black velour, sunroof, AT, monsoon. I think I'm gonna like this car, big time. Rolling along at 50, 60, 70+ mph, the thing feels electric it's so smooth you can't tell it's running. 2700 rpm @ 75mph is so cool!

So what's the break-in for a TDI? Don't floor it for the first 1k miles? I was surprised how quick it is off the line.
Chalk up another gasser turned TDI fan.

Re: Mr.squarepants

Bob, congratulations on the new ride. I am not a big fan of white cars but the MkIV Jetta looks damn nice in white.
Also, based upon your relatively flat terrain and high ambient temperatures, you should look forward to some nice MPG scores even when equipped with the auto trans.
Have fun and perhaps you can slip down to Mexico to get some of their Grade AAA diesel juice.

Re: Mr.squarepants (dieseldorf)

So warm temps help mpg on a TDI? Cool!
Is 45mpg realistic on the highway with Automatic?
We are lovin' this car already. I can't believe how silent and smooth it is at speed! I'm already considering a 5spd TDI for my next VW!
To sweeten the deal, I got it for $300 over as the dealer needed to move some cars and had quite a few TDIs on the lot. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: Mr.squarepants (spongebob_squarepants)

quick breakin proceduere: Drive the damn thing!
Seriously.. it doesnt need to be broken in, and theres nothing you can do to hurt it. Some people caution against long idling (hours, dont worry about a few minutes here or an hour in traffic therre... you get the point) Because you have an automatic, your economy will suffer slightly over the manual, but itll still impress you if youve been driving a gasser. Just drive it as you normally would, and dont worry. if you practice maintence according to the book, the engine will far outlast the rest of the car, so that should be the least of your concerns. Flooring it is actually recommended, it keeps stuff clean!
Another question.. what brand fuel do they sell in the pineapple under the sea?

Nobody mentioned the 3 extra glow plugs that heat the coolant to get heat into the car quicker.
Turn the temp knob all the way up, and the fan must be on (forget if that must be all the way up too).

Re: Mr.squarepants (spongebob_squarepants)

glad to hear another satisfied TDI owner... i think 45mpg on highway is true on a auto, i average 43mpg and i drive pretty hard, i get better if i drive conservative or more highway... as far as the a/c it's too cold, heat is good could take a bit to warm up in cold mornings but i got cold weather package... i do notice better mileage when the weather is fair to warm..
good luck with the new ride..good deal on it to...

,,,,,,,,,,HELL YEA,,,,DIESELS RUN SO COLD,,ON THE VW TDI,,THEY ACTUALLY PUT supplemental glo plugs in the water outlet on the head going to the heater core,,when coolant temp drops off they get warm in the coolant, etc,,voila,,you have heat,,,isnt gonna affect the a/c part of it at all,,,
