How do I know when my fuel filter is going bad? Are there any signs to look for?

Re: A question about fuel filter replacement (N.E.R.D.)

The only way to really tell and be sure is to do a fuel flow test, which can't be done by most do-it-yourselfers.
It should be changed as a PREVENTATIVE measure, not as something that gets changed when it fails.

Re: A question about fuel filter replacement (BadAssCorrado)

not only is it cheap, but it's actually kinda fun.......and ohh so satisfying when you've got it done(even if you didn't need it, you'd swear the car runs better
). it's also quite easy, just a bit time consuming since you have to "coax" the plastic housing from the retaining clips.
I notice you have a '99, what type of miles are on it? It still may be kinda early for a fuel filter?

Re: A question about fuel filter replacement (Frankenwagen)

I too have a '99 (45k). I plan to do it at 50k as with my previous A3. They are easy to do and I think Potterman charges $15 for a new one, too cheap not to do. If you want to avoid having to depressurizing the system, just let the car sit overnight and do it in the morning BEFORE you start the vehicle.

I have 47,000 miles on my car. Should I change it. I already have the Filter. ALos should I take the time to change the front o2 sensor since thats sitting here too?

Jesus!, I must drive the poop out of my car
. Well, I know I do, I have 81,3XX miles on my car. The reason that I asked this question is because most of the time the car does not start on the first crank, but always on the second crank. If it does start on the first crank it takes a little longer to start than normal.

hey nerd......
change the filter, it may be the cause of your problem, and is the cheapest easiest thing that could remedy your problem. Everything else would probably cost more than $15 and a couple hours of your time

I didn't let mine sit, nor bleed the line, just caught what little fuel was in the line in a catchpan.
