I have an '85 jetta 8v engine laying around and I was wondering what other engines(specifically the engine codes) are compatable with it as far as putting it into an 86-90 VW jetta/golf/gti. Most likely a Jetta. Would I have any problems with CIS injection versus CIS-E or dignifant injection and or other electrical parts? What are problems that I would run into? Also how would I tell which engine is in a car by its VIN?

Your biggest problem would be the compression ratio of the engine. Digifant engines
and CIS-E engine with knock sensors are higher compression. Some have
bigger valves and different cam grinds. Unless you know what your doing I would not
mix these parts up.
