Hey. I was laying in bed and the thought popped into my head. GTI......4WD......Syncro....hmmmm, anybody know what one would need for such a conversion? Probably rather difficult, but still, any ideas?

Re: A2 Golf Syncro Conversion? (jcadman)

Let's see, there were about 4000 Golf Country's made for the Euro market. Find one. Stick your GTI motor in it, and you're there.
US never got anything smaller than the Passat/Quantum in AWD did we? Doubt the components would fit.

say thanks to cullen
, after all I "stole" it from his sig/
Keep in mind that the countries weren't the only AWD mk2's that came from wolfsburg.
there were also the regular base model syncro's
reading from various sources I have gathered there were:
~5000 rally golfs
70 or 79 golf limited's
the closest thing in North america was the canadian g60 syncro passat

Re: A2 Golf Syncro Conversion? (88Jetta)

I dont remember who had this sig but i saw it and <since i didnt already have one> added it to mine. I figured he wouldnt mind, if anything its a compliment to his ingenuity.
Anyways, yeah, I know about the VW Rallye's, really nice autos. But, they're a pain to find in North America <nearly impossible>. They are a little easier to find in England, but I dont know how much it would cost to ship it <or if thats even possible>? So then I thought it might just be easier to convert a GTI to a synchro. Would a g60 syncro passat transfer to a GTI, or is that just not possible <i know little or nothing about Passats>?

Dont forget there where NORMAL Syncro GOlfs around and they are plenty around, my friend got one for under $1000 2 weeks ago.
But yes on an A2 its a bit too much work due to the fact that the TUNNEL also needs to be swapped!

Re: A2 Golf Syncro Conversion? (88Jetta)

Here's what I know of Syncro production numbers....
71 Golf Limiteds (very rare g60 16v engine, hand built)
151 Golf G60 Syncros (basically the same as a Rallye Golf, with the regular body
)
5000 Golf Rallyes
5000 Golf Countrys (3500 regular, 1500 chrome edition)
???? how knows how many Regular 1.8 Golf Syncros!
about 1000 A2 Jetta Syncros....
If you could find a wrecked TT quattro, you mihgt be able to use the gearboxes and propshaft along with a rear subframe from a Quantum Syncro (B2 Passat), but finding a Quantum Syncro in a junk yard is hard. You're looking at a lot of work, but definately worth it once you get the beast together.
Here's a project I might try: Quantum Syncro set up into a Fox wagon. It should be very little work, plus make one awesome wagon rally-ready.

Re: A2 Golf Syncro Conversion? (PimpStylin')

its too much work to convert a us spec golf to synchro. for what it would cost to either import the floor or create a whole new one and weld it in, plus piece all the parts together and so on and so one u might was well just look into importing a ralley golf. if u have a friend in the military it would make things a LOT easier. i belive u can import the 88-89 ralley golfs into us with very lil problems, other then the fees u have to pay

Not sure if the TT and Quantum gearing ratio fron and rear would match up!?!
One is 4motion the other OLDER Syncro!

Or to put it in lay man's terms: the QSW is the first gen quattro. So what would happen is that if you had a centre drive shaft fabricated, you would still have full time 4wd but the front to rear connection would be stiff (as in locked all the time). Not good for the rear diff and cv-joints.

Especially if the ratio would be different in F and R
