Hey. I was laying in bed and the thought popped into my head. GTI......4WD......Syncro....hmmmm, anybody know what one would need for such a conversion? Probably rather difficult, but still, any ideas?

Re: A2 Golf Syncro Conversion? (jcadman)

Well, this is a topic that has been discussed a lot, do a quick search and you should be able to pull up a bunch of info. If you have the money to spend, why not just buy a Ralleye from Fast Enough?

Like butch says, if you can get a Rallye from FastEnough... go with them... less of a hassle!!! Some people have done/are doing such conversions and it's very involved... But worth it on models not originally available with it... There are a few Corrado's and I know of a Jetta 16v in ontario that's got one.... The cool factor is definitely way up there!!!! But if you can get one allready done by the factory, it would be cheaper, easier and faster than doing it yourself!!!

Re: A2 Golf Syncro Conversion? (MUNKIN)

Syncro's tend to be cheaper in the east... In the vancover area they seem to fetch between 7 and 10K while Quebec sees them in the 5000-8000$ a pop... of course these numbers are in Canadian pesos... a real joke for an american buyer!!! If you intend to swap only the driveline, yo can be less concerned with the state of the engine... The drivetrain is pretty bullet proof, so you'd have to find a really lame example to get trouble from that... If the car is from eastern Canada, watch for rust in the floorpans.... Especially the rear section and the tunnel that you will need to do the swap.
Talk to Vince and Kieth, they hang around the forum here... Kieth has a syncro Corrado, and Vince is currently in the process of building himself one.... They can help you more with the actual swap details.

Youi're right about the difficulty factor, to convert a golf to syncro would be a serious amount of work. You'd have to remove the entire center tunnel and replace it with a corrado unit. To do this the car would need to be on a frame machine as the body would crumple under it's own weight with out the center tunnel. You could possibly get by with a cutting torch and do lots of mods to the tunnel, but I'me not sure.
One would have to be certifiable to do this for any kind of gain, the corrado is much easier and it's still really involved. By the time I'me done I will have the satisfaction of doing the entire conversion myself. The only things I haven't done are the machine work and the balanceing. I've got a friend who's a certified welder and he's going to help me with the welding.
One needs much patience to work on a syncro, and the parts are difficult to come by. You'll need a custom exaust, or a factory syncro golf/ralley one from europe $$$. You'll also need the syncro header, downpipe and gastank (or fuelcell).
What is the reason you want awd anyway?
If you'd like to im me I'll let you know anything I can.
