not to talk sh!t but air bags are stupid plus you would have to buy a new airbag 800-1000$ because there illegal to buy used than you would have to buy all the sensors and install them some how...it would be a big waste of time a roll cage would be cheaper and better as long as you remember to pad it! plus it looks better imo

Re: A3 airbag in A2 (LeatherMK2)

it's not really possible. you would need to mount airbag sensors in the bumpers in addition to the computer associated. the electronics alone are fairly complex. basically, this is completely impossible for someone to do. if anyone has done this, i will truly be shocked.
Re: A3 airbag in A2 (3WheelGTi)

ok hehe its cool guys thanks...ill just get the A3 or A4 steering wheel... is it hard to fit em??
Re: A3 airbag in A2 (LeatherMK2)

when vw puts them in a spesific car they are tuned and timed by comuters to go off at exact times and at exact nm of impact.. it would be WAY too expensive if even possable
Re: A3 airbag in A2 (LeatherMK2)

Get a cage and a harness system. If she will pay for the air bag that is near impossible then she should pay for the cage and harness. It will be cheaper anyway.

ahhh, how cute mommy wants to protect her baby, lol just messin i say get the cage and harness, also in order to get the "full" affect tell her that you need some racing seats, eh its worth a try

You must have some serious Nazi police in your neck of the woods. Last time I checked, used (not to be confused with "deployed") airbags and associated control modules were perfectly legal to buy and sell. Why anyone would want to try to put one in an older car is a different story...

ABS and airbags... the modern alternatives to responsible driving (and the urban houswife's savior).

Not worth the hassle
Re: A3 airbag in A2 (CARVER)

You have an 85, so you'll need the late model spline adapter on your steering column.
All the bits for an airbag are in the A1 Cabriolet (later years). The only problem is that you have non-CE2 wiring so nothing will plug and play. You'll need your moms help with the schematics and a nice soldering iron. Carefull not to breathe the fumes, have your mom buy you a filter mask if it becomes unbearable. Good luck. (little sarcastic). I have the A3 airbag wheel in my 85 Jetta. I also have the module for the airbag, I did a VR6 swap from a 96 Passat so I have CE2 wiring. I'm looking to get the sport steering wheel with airbag from a 2000 Cabrio as it fits the splines of my steering column (late A2). The airbag wheel is only for cosmetics and comfort (pricey though). I'm going with a 4 point harness (inertia reel Schroth or Sabelt) so I'm not in need of a functioning airbag.
