A3 Idle problems

I have a '96 VW GTI that I recently did a turbo on. I don't think that is part of the problem, but when I first started it, it wouldn't idle and was running too rich. The check engine light came on as well. I replaces the Mass Air Flow Sensor and it started to run much better. It still idles rough though, and the check engine light is still on. What can cause this? Please help!!!

Did you run cooler plugs? If you had access to a VAG Tool, that would be the easy way to find out what does is being thrown. I'd offer mine, but you're a tad too far away.

Thanks for the offer, I guess I need to find someone localy that has the VAG
Re: A3 Idle problems (stay4fun)

96 & later 2.0L engines have a little motor in the throttle body that controls idle speed instead of the idle bypass solinoid valve on earlier cars. If your TB gets carboned up so the throttle plate doesn't move smoothly, the little motor can't keep up with the ECU idle commands. It starts to over shoot high, then low and you get a very "lumpy" idle. When it gets really bad, the motor overshoots low far enuff to case the car to have "random misfires" and you get a CE with that trouble code. Taking Gumout to the throttle plate (front and rear) and the pivot points, followed with a little shot of WD40 to the pivots clears it right up from my experience. Don't know how forced induction would impact all this.
Re: A3 Idle problems (spitpilot)

Yes, he is right. I had this problem where my car would not idle well at all. It would try to idle, then it oscillate between idle and ~400 rpm. Eventually it would die. Cleaning the TB cleared it right up! Never threw any codes though, maybe that is because of the turbo?
Re: A3 Idle problems (spitpilot)

I will try to do that, the thing is I just put the turbo on and haven'r run the car with it yet. It has been garaged the last 6 mos and the 1st time I started it, this happened
Re: A3 Idle problems (stay4fun)

you may have un metered air going into the engine. BE SURE to check ALL of your boost connections. When I first installed my turbo I did not tighten all of the boost tube connectors and I would blow them apart.. the car would sputter and die because it was letting un metered air into the engine..
Another way for un metered ait to get in would be through this little hole on top of the throttle body. this hole runs to the charcoal canister or something and the hose can easilt come off. check there too.
