ACKKK!! need help fast!! amplifier question>>>

ok... I've got a blown door speaker heh.... well while I was messing around with balance, bass and treble trying to figure out which speaker was blown... I turned my amp and subs off (they run off a remote switch..kinda like a valet thing) ANYWAYS when I turned them back on.... no bass!!!
well crawling around to the back where the amp is mounted I notice a blue spark from where the ground wire goes into the amp. I turned the ignition off and found, with further investigation, that the ground wire had come completely out from where it goes into the amp!
my question is... did I damage anything!!! what about when it sparked?? do you think anything has been blown up?? or will it be fine as soon as the ground is reconnected??
FYI this has nothing to do with the blown door speaker.... those are still running on the stock mach 460 amp, totally seperate (it still pisses me off though
)

Well if you fried the amp you would know because frying an amp STINKS!!! (I mean actuall smell) You may have just blown a fuse which is no biggie. Is this on the new GTi??

Dani: does this mean you're car finally showed up. Is the long wait over?

You know if you traded it the dealer inspections are pretty cursory (since in general they wouldn't keep a car of that age on their lot) so I'd doubt they'd find out.

i traded my old 96 Jetta GLX in with a bad window regulator, and the door panel completly off the door and in the trunk. they didnt care, they took it just the same, i am sure they saw it and figured they would fix it. i also left no power to my speakers as i pulled the amp right before turning it in...no mention of this either on turn in.
I wouldnt worry about 1 bad speaker upon turn in.

If the amp is fused, it should've only blew the fuse. Aside from that, I don't think that you've blown the amp. I have about 3 years of car audio experience and I've never heard of an amp being shorted like that before. Mosy likely, if the amp's ground wire was disconnected and the amp still worked, the amp had found another place to ground. I think the amp casing in the Maxh 460 is made of metal, it could be grounding from the casing. Check the fuse, replace if needed, and check the speaker. After that trade that sucka in and get a real car! j/k, just screwing with ya. Are you still on Audiworld forums?
Re: ACKKK!! need help fast!! amplifier question>>> (vertigobora)

actually it wasnt the mach 460 amp that blew... it was my 600 buck soundstream refrence amp

It just happend to blow the same time the door speaker went

anyways.... that stupid thing does have two internal fuses... so we pulled the entire rack down... took the amp off.. and guess what!!! both fuses are in perfect working order

that stupid f'n POS soundstream blew up again! we took the cover off and couldnt find any burnt circuitry
at least the first time it went you could tell... it litterally exploded and melted the board lol..
well crap this pisses me off. I'd been warned by several friends in the industry that soundstream was junk... Should a listened to them!!! http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif

oh and yeah i'm still on audiworld... every once in a great while.
So what do you think of JL amps?? I was going to use this soundstream to run my mids/tweets in the dub... but I think i'm not going to bother with it anymore... It was suggested to me to use a JL 250/1 monoblock for the subs (prolly use a JL stealthbox) and the JL 300/2 for my MB Quartz musicomp seperates. Eclipse non powered head unit

opinions?

JL amps are good, however, I'm not a big fan of amps that are designed to be used at low impedance levels (anything lower than 2ohms.) My personal favorites? I like Memphis audio.
It also depends on what kind of sound you're looking for. IMHO, sound quality is much better than sound "quantity." Big boom is kewl, I guess
, to some people but sound quality is a much more pleasurable experience.
If it was up to me here's what a good system would be consist of.
1.) All speakers are amplified by an external amplifier.
2.) All speakers are controlled by an equalizer and/or crossover.
3.) Use one amp company, like if you were to run 2 amps, make sure that both of them are from JL. Differences in amps (total harminic distortion, and internal crossover rolloff slope) will show once all speakers are amplified.
4.) Get a variety of sizes in speakers. I'm running 6.5" in the fronts of my Jetta and 5.25" in the rear. When the sub is installed (I gotta finish the box
) the sound in the car will be balanced.
5.) Run smaller speakers next to bigger ones. If you're going to run a sub in the trunk of your car, don't run 6X9's in the rear. 6x9's are the poor mans sub. The rear of the car will be very bass heavy and sound ****e. GO for 5.25" or smaller in the rear.
If you'd like to know anything else don't hesitate to IM me or email. Later!
BTW: Here's a pic of my amp.

thanks!
I'm not a boom fan either. I like my sound systems as close as I can get to true audiophile quality as I can get.
in the mustang I ran a kenwood excelon ps907, two infinity kappa 10 subs and the soundstream powering them (running at 2ohm... its supposedly stable to 1). I still had the stock mach 460 amps running the stock front speakers with the rear removed (its a 2 seater... no need for rear speakers)
for the dub I plan on an eclipse CD8051 player (no power of its own), a set of MB Quartz 6.5/tweets in the door with the musicomp crossovers, most likely a JL audio stealthbox because I dont want a bunch of heavy boxes nor do I want any lost trunk space. I think on a small, quiet car like this a single 10 will work fine. I planned on possibly the JL 250/1 amp for the stealthbox... so the 300/2 for the MB's? I sure dont want to bother with that soundstream anymore.
I'm not sure what to do about rear speakers.... If I should try a set of two ways or remove them all together and not worry about rear fill? I hardly ever have rear passengers and the ones I do have could care less about the music quality lol.... I want the music for myself.

Which car are you talking abot for the rear fill, the Stang or the GTI? The GTI would make a bit of difference as the rear woofer is close to the driver. You'd lose a bit of mid bass, imaging wouldn't suffer much.
For the Mustang, I'm not sure where the speaker placement is. IF it's in the rear package tray you'll be able to tell that they are missing big time. It'll seem like all the sound is coming from the front and all of the bass is coming from the rear so the balance would be way off. In return, the empty holes in the package tray will act like speaker box ports. You'll get louder more responsive bass.
Again, we're all pulling for your sis!

i'm trading in my explorer with the following "perks"
a/c - doesnt get colder than 80 degrees fahrenheit
power mirrors - aren't power anymore
gas gauge - broken
windshield - cracked
mileage - oh yea 189,000
rear seatbelts - missing
passenger side rear window - only goes up with "help"
armrest - never had it
check engine light - the one thing thats always on
rust - oh yea
plus - my aunt closing her automatic garage door on the tailgate when she borrowed it
vw is actually paying me money to take this car off my hands
they wont care if your amplifier doesnt work ( they probably won't check )

Re: ACKKK!! need help fast!! amplifier question>>> (Rave'nGTi)

if only the ground line was loose, then you should be fine. if the unit wasn't grounded, no power could flow. the blue spark you saw was from the current trying to flow to ground to complete the circuit.
no worries!

I'm not sure what to do in the rear on the GTI. but based on what you've just told me i'll prolly just ditch the rear speakers heh...
On the mustang I already ditched them... and they were in the package tray, and there was a big difference... but it was a difference I liked. As far as the sub-bass goes... its not unbalanced at all, bass is supposed to be non-directional... but regarless you cant tell the subs are in the rear of the car.

oh and the amp is deffinately DEAD
POS
Re: ACKKK!! need help fast!! amplifier question>>> (Rave'nGTi)

Ouch. Dead amps are no fun..... Anyways, are you getting the Monsoon system in your GTI?
Re: ACKKK!! need help fast!! amplifier question>>> (Rave'nGTi)
