Was driving home tonight and seen a "mini" Accord, an Acura EL 1.6? It was obviously a Civic with an Accord rear and front. Never had seen one, IMO it was kinda odd. Had Ontario plates.

Re: Acura EL? (JettaBoy04)

EL's market positioning is similar to US's Civic EX sedan. Since there are lots of Canadian who love to buy entry-level luxury brand, say a C240 taxi trim and 318i, Acura decided to drop the Integra sedan in flavor of EL in 97.

Re: Acura EL? (brydymond)

There are more than cosmetic differences - the 1.6EL got the SOHC VTEC motor, which wasn't available in the Civic sedan line. It also got the rubber, four-wheel discs, and suspension calibrations and components from the Si/SiR. The seats were more deeply bolstered, leather and sunroof were available (again, not offered on the Civic sedan here), and there were some other minor interior trim upgrades. IMO, the changes made it a decent little car, and it didn't cost much more than our top Civic sedan while offering more content.

The EL sells very well here. For about $24,000.00 you can get it loaded with a CD player, leather, alloys, moonroof, power mirrors, locks, windows, mirrors. By comparison, you'd pay over $30,000.00 for a similarly equipped Jetta.

But the dash, the dash!!!
In all seriousness, I don't agree with that. You would get a lot of things on the VW (like heated seats, heated nozzles, gas strut hood, full-size spare, unintrusive trunk hinges, power remote trunk release, and lots of other luxury goodies) that you wouldn't get on the EL. Also, a comparably equipped Jetta 1.8T will not run you anywhere near $30K. The only way to get close to $30K would be to order the sport/lux package and 17" wheels with serious rubber. The EL has puny 15" wheels with meager rubber.... Oh, and there is that matter of the 50+ extra hp and lbs-ft of torque...

Re: Acura EL? (Double-V)

A 2.0 Jetta 5-speed with leather and 15" alloys is $27,485.00. A 1.8T 5-speed with leather and 15" alloys is $29,585. Add the Sport Luxury package to that and the price is $30,785.

Huh, right you are!!!!
Although I still stand by my original point regarding features that aren't found on the EL

The Jetta has features that the EL doesn't, I agree there. That's really not a concern to people who buy the EL. For them it's a well made, well equiped car for a good price.
