Advantages of ditchin the AC.

919 Views 12 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  GTIVR6RACER4EVER
ohk. so i live in seattle meaning its not very hot much at all. so my ac is RARELY used( only when i got the girl in the car) seeing as i can just roll down my windows with the push of a button. so my question is what all would i gain from ditchin the AC. i know it would free up weight and a few extra ponies, but how much? and would i be able to sell it after i took it out? thanks in advance.

for one youre car will lose almost 30 lbs, which is good, it look nicer in the engine bay without all those metal pipes runnin all over. probably gain like 1 or 2 from the engine not having to crank that pulley a nymore

i think you lose alot more than 30 lbs...

i had a full corrado swap in my a2 and when i removed all the ac stuff it was 58.4 lbs on my scale so Go ahead and take it off

Keep it handy, though, because it probably would have an impact on resale.

better airflow to the radiator http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
the best is the weight reduction the front end will be way more tossable without 55+ pounds exactly where you don't want it (unless your sport of favor is drag racing)

I second the better air flow to the rad. My coolant temps went way down when I removed the AC.
...and of course the weight loss was nice.

Removing everything out of an A3 engine compartment gets you 27lbs.
There is one piece left that is in the actual heater/AC/fan housing under the dash but it is a PITA to deal with and is only about 3lbs... not worth the effort.

"INCLUDING THE ENGINE?!?"
j/k. But seriously 27 lbs . . . that doesn't seem like much as compared to what you could remove/relocate . . .

I was debating this as well. However all of those pro's for removing it dont equal the comfort of knowing you can always be cooled up.
I use my A/c Maybe... MAYBE once a year, other then that i run it 15 minutes a month to keep the bearings smooth. It blows ICE COLD instantly.
All together its 25-30lbs, so its a decent amount of weight, and with the euro rad suppot/rebar, and battery relocation, the front end becomes much more managable.
if you know for sure you wont need it to sell the car, go for it
