First let me say that after owning my 2002 GLX 5-speed Manual for a week, it is simply amazing to me that a car costing under $28K can be this refined. Best money I have ever spent on a car. Now that I have had some time behind the wheel, here are a few things that I like and dislike:
LIKE:
1. Handling (better than I thought it would be)
2. Quietness (super quiet at 80 mph+)
3. Armrest (seems to adjust to the ideal spot)
4. Cupholders (fit a Dunkin Donuts medium perfectly!)
5. Ergonomics (unbelievably good - I even see the dash dimmer switch in between the spokes)
6. Monsoon (sounds great with CD, radio reception good, and has better bass than expected)
7. Headlights (bright and focused, much better than the units on the Jeep I got rid of)
8. GLX Wheels (not sure of the name of the stock wheels, but they are growing on me and seem to look closer to 17" - probably because the spokes extend out to the lip)
9. Elbow room (the depressions in the door panel molding make for a ton of elbow room - comfortable for people with long arms such as myself)
DISLIKES:
1. Seat side bolsters (I find that through aggressive cornering, the seats could use mroe bolstering)
2. Lumbar support (could use about an extra inch of lumbar)
3. Factory floormats (very, very cheap - after 3 days of driving the mats already had permanent depressions where my heels were)
4. Chrome around gauges (the quality of the chrome doesn't seem as high as the rest of the interior materials).
5. Owners manual cubby hole in dash (too tight, as my manual doesn't seem to want to fit into it)
Well, those are my initial thoughts. I really like the ride as is. I thought I'd be itching to throw in an aftermarket suspension right away, but that isn't the case. There is a little more squat and dive than I'd like, but the cornering is much flatter than I thought it would be.
The quality of the floormats is pathetic. Actually, for me it isn't a big deal, as I tossed them aside yesterday in favor of the VW Premium Rubber Floormats (not the big monster ones). I really like the Premium Mats because they aren't so thick that they'll look out of place in the car all year round, which is what I plan on doing.
Well, just figured I'd post these thoughts after a week of ownership. Overall I am elated with the car.
Mike

The only thing I use my "cubby hole" in my dash is for holding my sunglasses. For some reason, the powers that be at VW, when redesigning the Passat and the interior, made the opening wider than the radio. This prevents me from installing a seperate in-dash CD player.
BTW, this is a 1998 only problem. The VW designers woke up and made the hole equal to the radio in 1999.
Other than this, I'm very happy with my Passat. This is my 5th VW, but my 1st Passat. I'm glad to hear you're happy with your Passat as well.

Actually, I didn't communicate that too well. I meant the cutout just under the steering column that was made specifically for holding the manual. Sorry!

Oh, Ok. I know what you're talking about now. My 1986 Jetta had a storage compartment under the steering wheel. But my previous 1996 Golf and my current 1998 Passat don't have that luxury. Nice to see VW brought it back.

I don't know about you, but I keep my owners manual in my glove box. Like I have with every other vehicle I've ever owned.

my owner's manual fits like a glove! it took me a while to get all the stuff inside shifted the right way in the binder, and i took out a bunch of redundant pamphlets from the pocket in the cover, but when it's closed properly, it slips right in and once i get my fingers on the top and bottom, it comes right out.
vwguild - what do you mean the manual is *supposed* to stay at home??? i've got 6k on my car and i've referenced information from the manual numerous times. the overview guide seems like just that. an overview. what's that space intended for if not the manual?

It is meant for nothing...you will notice that it is *unlined*, no rubber
floor like the small opening on the left...or the door pockets...
Ideally, the Owner's Manual should be read through shortly after
taking delivery of the car; with special attention to the Controls &
Equipment and Tips & Advice Booklets(3.1 & 3.2). Taking a look
at video tape is also a good idea for those that cannot read

This is a personal call...I am not going to sit here and tell anyone
what to do...if you want to keep the Owner's manual there; go ahead...
It is just my opinion that those books should be kept as new and fresh
looking as possible, so at the end of the day they can be presented to
a perspective 2nd owner with a certain freshness that tells that person
that you really care about your car and all related items...It creates
a nice impression...that and having all of the services properly stamped
in the Maintenance Booklet...

What video tape?

Hey Michael,
post some pics for us...we want to see your car.

I will post some pics as soon as I can clean it up. I washed it the other day and it's already a mess. This weekend probably.

You are supposed to get a video tape that gives an overview of the most important features and controls. I actually watched mine out of curiousity and it is a fairly well made video covering all the necesssary basics.
Heck, my dealer even takes pictures of their new customers posing in front of their new shiny rides, and then mails them a calendar with the piture on it.

I'm surprised to hear this. My manual seats have a lumbar adjustment that can provide waaaay more support than I'd expect any human could stand. I would have assumed that the power seats could also do this.

I wonder if it is due to my height? I am 6'3", and to me, it seems like just a little more travel would be ideal. It's certainly adequate now, and I find the seats very comfortable overall. I like the fact that the seats are firm and supportive. The seats in my last vehicle were mushy, which made them really comfortable for the first 5 minutes, then uncomfortable the rest of the time...

My Owners Manual and scheduled maintainence book are in my glove box in their protective cover provided by VW.

And for some reason the dealership failed to stamp my book last week when I had my oil changed, even though I layeed my book out in the passenger seat in plain view. So I just wrote it in myself.

Same thing happened to me at my 5k mile service. I was already prepared to spend a few minutes picking up the car, checking the oil level and all, so I just marched over to the service desk and asked for the stamp. "Sure thing!" got it, and went home. Don't be embarrassed to go back and ask for it. Quite a few secondary market buyers do like to see those stamps.

I trust that you did not expect the Tech to stamp the book; that is the job
of your Service Advisor...And writing it in yourself is a waste of time...the
Maintenance Booklet has to be marked with the Dealer's stamp...

I didn't know that. I'll remember that next time I'm at the dealership for maintenance. But for the record, I don't deal with a Service Advisor at my dealership. I only deal with the Service Manager.

I wrote it in to help remind me when my next oil change is. And some type of written record is better than no record at all IMO.
