Wondering where you guys have/would fit a different intercooler, as I'm doing so soon, but am confused of where the best place would be...consider efficiency of the cooling, plumbling, power boost, blah blah blah
thanks

Front mount or in front of the radiator, depending on wether you want to cut a hole in your bumper or ditch the A/C.
In the engine bay leaves waaaay too much of a chance of heatsoak, unless you are really careful. Plus, it limits the size quite a bit.
The only time I'd do something inside the engine bay would be if 1) I was doing an air/water IC, or 2) it was something really rare and "cool" (ha ha) like the OEM non-ac intercooler that Llew has.

Re: Aftermarket intercooler - best location (SaabFan)

ummm, i found that a stock late model twin turbo supra intercooler is HUGE and will fit perfectly on top of the tranny with the inlet and outlet facing the charger and the TB, maybe perfect for a air-water if it aint too big. hmmmmm.
Re: Aftermarket intercooler - best location (SaabFan)

i'd like to go for a fm but the piping would be alot more work than for the ac removal location right...my ac just seized up 2 weeks ago so i figure i wouldn't really be losing the ac...i know this has been discussed b4 but how much can could i be looking at from the ic in front of the rad and which ones would fit specifically...thanks again

How much as far as power gains? It's hard to say, and it really depends on the mods on your car already.
Which ones fit? You go find out then come tell us.
The Saab 9000 or early Volvo (they are very similar) would be my first choice, you'll most likely need custom end tanks though.
As far as the pipe routing being easier or more difficult between "front mount" or "in front of radiator mount" I'd be willing to bet that the pipe routings would be very similar.
Oh, and hey - if you wanna get your A/C back, drop me a line - I've got 90% of the components from the A/C system from my Corrado collecting dust in my shop right now.

thanks...
has anyone done the ac-intercooler swap, any feedback?
Re: Aftermarket intercooler - best location (flawlessG60)

this is what mine looks like, but I have no SC any more. Put the I/C in between the charger and throttle body, short pipes is the way to go. I say get a air to liquid I/C but they are a lot of money.

What about heat soak and possible hampering of the radiators cooling efficiency by placing the IC directly in front of it? Any or not noticeable?

I've never had an IC mounted in front of the radiator on my Corrado, but I'd say it wouldn't be a problem. Heck, the A/C condenser is there stock, so if ya take that off and put an IC there instead, it shouldn't hurt the radiator.
And heak soak of the IC shouldn't be a problem, either I'd imagine - plenty of cars come from the factory with the IC right in there with the radiator and the A/C condenser - check out an old Volvo or Saab 9000.

Mark, i'm in your area and am considering turbo conversion on my current daily driver, and would really appreciate a ride in yours...
Re: Aftermarket intercooler - best location (Lysholm)

Well I'll be at the next gtg, I think its the one in North Hampton on April 21. By then I'll be used to it, and will be running 15 lbs of boost for a daily driver. I'll give you a ride onlyf you give me a ride in the lysholm of yours http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: Aftermarket intercooler - best location (flawlessG60)

In place of the stock radiator!

Really, this is the latest config I am working on, and started this weekend. First off, the IC is a 30x13x2 core (a bit larger with the sides than the stock radiator). I am using a big fluidyne oil cooler in the bumper to cool the water (has it's own set of muffin fans). The oil is now on it's own cooler in the stock IC possition, so it doesn't add to the water's heat. The A/C coils are still there right now (until I put a new one in the back of the car) - if I can get the charger bend in. I think I may replace the stock fan with a thin flex-a-lite.
After that is all together, I am planning on putting the big liquid IC back in, between the air IC and the TB. This will be attached via a jabsco pump to a cool can. The cool can is to hold ICE water (normal or dry) for short 30-50 minute races (or long where fuel refills are allowed). The pump is actuated by a switch and the TB temp will be monitored to keep the air from going below freezing (when using dry ice).
Pictures as soon as it is finished!
Unfortunatly this doesn't put me in a good category for SCCA, but it will be alot of fun to drive, I hope... http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: Aftermarket intercooler - best location (hallkbrd)

what kind of core are you using...i'm thinking of using a condensor from a actual refrigerator and making custom endcaps...heard that this one could work
