Contacted 3 dealers in Chicagoland area yesterday/today and they are already sold out!! Guess I'll have to wait until 2003.
VW probably has their foot in their mouth after thinking they couldn't sell these cars.

Don't assume the dealers know what they're talking about. There has been talk of an internet certificate system which would supercede the dealers taking of deposits. I doubt the distribution method for DE's has been finalized yet.

I don't see how they can be "sold out" when the allocation and distribution has yet to be worked out. Dealers who are taking deposits are just making promises they can't keep (big surprise there).

Re: All the DE's are all freakin sold out!! (thalter)

I contacted Jennings VW, Libertyville IL, and Ed Murphy IL. They all told me they are getting 1-2 cars in and they are already spoken for. The *HUGE* problem with VW dealers (atleast ones I've spoken with) is that they will NOT work on your car/do maintenance/do warranty work unless you purchase your car there. I simply can't buy a car 200 miles away and then only get it serviced there.
I may just wait until 2003 until they get more in, or maybe I'll scan the lots to see if someone backed out of a deal.

Yeah -- you need to wait. You clearly don't want the car badly enough to even bother. And what you say about not working on a car that wasn't purchased there is B.S. Dealers make more $$ on service than on sales. They may not offer a loaner car (maybe) but they'll do the work. I think they almost have to per their dealer agreement with VWoA.

Exactly.
Can you imagie buying a car in New York, having to move house to D.C. and finding out that nobody will service your car? It just wouldn't happen.
E30M3 is right - dealers make decent cash from service. This cash either comes from our pockets or from VW's warranty support payouts. They're laughing either way.

Those dealers are pulling your leg...
If you have a problem with a dealership who won't service your vw, Then you get yourself on the phone to vwoa and you complain.
I bought my car from gunther vw (those from south florida know where it is.)
I live in kendall it is at least a good 45 min highway drive from where i live.
I take my car for service to esserman international which 3 minutes away from my job and 9 miles from my home.

Obviously you do not deal with some crap dealers - if that is the case - good for you. Call Jennings - they will NOT touch anyones car unless they bought it there. Whether this is because they have too many customers cars to worry about or not - I do not know.

Seriously man if they are giving you this story I would E-mail or call vwoa right now and tell them what the dealer told you,I would add that you are a current vw owner add would very much like to continue in this fashion but your local dealers rubbing you the wrong way.
I e-mailed vw through their website the other day and they are pretty quick to respond.
(I can understand a dealer maybe feeling this way under the old warranty where 2/24,000 b2b was paid by vw but 2002 on the scheduled visits arent free any more.

It's too late today but I am going to call VWoA tomorrow and have them PICK a dealer for me that will have a car in stock for me to purchase.

Man, there are MANY more than 3 VW dealers in the Chicago area. Try Autobarn, try Crystal Lake VW, and don't forget across the border into Indiana. Team VW in Merrillville, IN. (although I'm first and only on their list as of now). If they get more than one, you're set. I live real close to Ed Murphy but I've heard horror stories about their service. So I probably wouldn't take my car there. Anyway, I just started doing my own oil changes so I don't have to deal with them (sick of having them put 5 FULL quarts in when it takes at most 4.5). The only thing they'll have to do for me is change the timing belt, that is if I own the car that long.

Thats partially my fault. Long time customer at Autobarn in Evanston...have one on deposit...
Apparently someone else got there shortly after me. If they get another, its his. I assume a fellow Vortexer.
