hey how do i test the alt to see if it is good? anybody know? and what should the voltage read? thanks again, K DOG

Is this installed or just by itself? If is out of the car, do as above. If its installed, measure voltage at your battery with a Digital Volt Meter (DVM) and it should read at least 14 volts DC when the car is running.

ok but your sure its at least 14v? my dad thought it was something like 13.8 and not actually 14?

The reason i said take it to get tested is because just knowing the voltage doesn't mean anything, the alt needs to be able to put out enough amps, it should also have the diodes checked, all of which can be done insantly with a tester. The voltage from an alt will vary from one to another but around 13.5 is normal.
