Re: ambient lights (helpmeplease)

small red LEDs in the ceiling in BMWs and Audis. they shine down in your lap and on the console w/ causing glare. They make the cabin at night seem more warm and "real." for the most part they just help you find buttons more quickly.
supposely, that reduces driver tension.
Re: ambient lights (HIDGolf)

is it possible to install them to our cars?
Re: ambient lights (2002_Jetta_GLI)

Ambient light is directionless by definition

really? well the BMW 528i sportwagen that I drove that had them, you could not even see where the light was coming from, unless you were directly under them, because they were so far into the ceiling. This I felt limited the scope of the light, giving it focus.

i imagine you could the talk to guys in the Audi A4 forum, they were talking about this a few weeks ago. I would try to find a car that did not have these integrated into the ceiling consule, but rather in a separate consule, by themselves. This should mount w/ little or no mods to your ceiling, minus routing the wires to the wires that lead to the switch that controls the overhead lamp.
Re: ambient lights (HIDGolf)

I've already done something similar in my A3 Jetta. I got a cheap LED brakelight with 14 red LEDS, cut the strip in two so I had two 7 LED sections, and glued them inside my domelight on both sides of the domelight bulb mounting. Wired them to a tiny toggle switch I mounted on the domelight lens (got power from the maplight). So at night, I can turn the LEDs on and get a nice red glow that I can use to read tape cassette labels, find the seatbelts, etc. without wiping out my nightvision. In the Navy we call it darken ship lighting.

I am not good at terms so I found that on the net!
But this is a fact that the term is refering to a LIGHTING TYPE.
Re: ambient lights (Cullen)

Which one?
Re: ambient lights (Cullen)

installing the audi/bmw- like ambient lights in our mkivs.. what parts do we need?
Re: ambient lights (2002_Jetta_GLI)

the new 3 series maybe a good place to start, I have the overhead unit here at work, its retangular and has interior, twin maplamps, twin amient lamps. I honestly do not know about the audis. I try going to dealerships and measuring the overhead units in the cars on the showroom floor.
But keep in mind, these lamps were designed to be mounted at such a heigh, at this angle, this far from the drivers eyes, buy moving it to a different car altogether, could cause some problems.
