OK- so i get my left wheel bearing replaced yesterday FINALLY, but my mechanic said both bearings are bad... when i turn the wheel to the right, that loud thumping noise occurs, so i thought it would be the driver side bearing hence all the pressure goes to that wheel when turning the wheel to the right. so after i got the left one fixed, THAT NOISE IS STILL THERE ARRRGGGHHHHHH!!!! so im going to get the right one replaced today, and hopefully that noise will go away. so heres my question- when i turn the wheel to the right, does it mean the drivers side bearing is bad? or is the passenger side? i guess it doesnt really matter now since im getting both replaced, im just curious to know if i wasted my money on a left bearing.... anyone know??

Re: ANOTHER freakin wheel bearing question (needaveedub)

I'm taking mine in today or tomorrow for wheel bearing replacement...
Mine's always humming on the road, and it's a little louder when turning left, but not by much. However, on a right turn, it goes away completely.. Passenger side bearing

Bingo! I have bad front bearings on my Mk1 right now and it's just a loud whirring sound from the front end. I can barely hear it over the exhaust noise though, but it's there, and getting louder. If it clicks or clunks it's most likely the CVs or a strut bearing clunking around. I suggest plunking down a hard earned $160 now for the PepBoys special rebulilt driveshafts and be done with it. Usually cheaper (and a whole lot faster) then getting yours cleaned/repacked.
Good luck with it!

It might last longer, but you can't beat a "lifetime guarantee" like PoohBoys offers with theirs! That and they'll take anything as a good core.. broken axles included http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

I beg to differ with you fellows, I have had a front wheel bearing go bad and when the condition escalates, it does make a thumping sound along with a whirring sound. If it gets really bad, it also shakes the hell out of the steering wheel. If it happens only when you turn the wheel to the right, that would be the drivers side, you can usually tell where the noise is coming from though....

if only my digi cam was working, id show you all the worst passenger wheel bearing you will ever see. I let it go for about 3 months and when i finaly took the caliper off, the spindle just fell out
, the retaining clip for the bearing was eaten alive and most of the ball bearings were nowhere to be found...

Could this be MY sound then? At a certain speed (about 90 km/h) it sounds like the rear passenger side starts to make this "loud road noise". I thought it might have been because of the winter tires, but it's only that rear corner. So.............?

Re: ANOTHER freakin wheel bearing question (Skaven)

Hey guys, no need to panic. I had the same thumping, whirring noise from mine. I was ready to go all out and replace the bearings, hub and housing but you know what I did instead? I jacked the car up, tightened the axle shaft nut to 200 foot pounds, lowered the car and the whirring/thumping?.....It went away. Try that first before you go out to replace a perfectly good bearing. Hey it might save you a lot of money.
