I picked up a 84 cabby today for a little more then $200.00 needs some work but
the body is good shape, the top in sad shape, the strut towers are in great shape! no rust in the normal places on a rabbit. Is there any different places on cabby's for rust i need to know about? also how does the top release to close?

what ??
you put the roof down and now you cannot get it back up ??
at side of rear seat , on plastic trim , look for 2 little "switches" one on each side
Re: Another new addition (ian c - U.K.)

the two levers that lock to the windshield when the top is closed? if that's how to release it. the cables are broken

It's been a strange year for finding vw's none of which I was looking for at the time. I was going out to eat and there was the 90 Jetta wolfburg dark red for sale on the side of the road. When the guy selling it answered to door saw that i was driving a 85 wolfsburg dark red jetta just like the one he was selling he said " I wanted $850.00 but I'll take $500.00 for it" I didn't even start the car or even open the doors. I said sold
The car was about a mile and a half from my house the guy even delivered it
I wanted it for a winter car I was going to change the motor to a TD diesel or TDI, had the motor looked at found out it was still good shape dropped in a trans, a new sun roof ( the after market roof was leaking) she starts on the first try every time burns no oil or leaks nothing even the cruise and the air works too

Then came the 81 pickup LX, my exhaust on the 90 jetta started rattling that morning so I stopped by my mechanic to see what was going on with it. Rick told me I was just about to call you I got a call about a hour ago about a 81 pickup with a bad head for sale but the body was in great shape no rust in the strut towers or in the bed has a top it came from ohio towed back to southfield. that he need to sell it. went and looked at and got it. enen delivered too and with a complete later model jetta diesel motor free
Then came the cabby it was for sell on the side of the road for $300.00 the guy parked it at that time it had all the windows now it only has the two vent windows drivers back window
:
but the body is in good shape but the tops not and has been down for a while and but there's two inches of water on the floor. bought it parts for the 81 pickup LX vent windows screwed in not glued in and the mirrors and a few little parts but after a long look at the cabby last night i'm going to remove all the water and broken glass, seats and the carpet and see if there is rust and how bad it is. the motor is missing parts also. But i have another 81 pickup diesel with very bad rust in the strut towers and in the frame under the drivers seat and some in the bed been taking parts for the 81 LX
but the motor and trans are in great shape
so depending on the condiction under the carpet if it's not to bad i'll strip motor and wiring harness out of the cabby. And take the diesel motor, trans wiring harness out of the junk caddy and made my little dream diesel cabby
wish me luck with it

no , they're to open roof and to adjust roof/screen surround seal when closed
when you lower roof it locks in place , to get roof up you have to release this mechanism .
the switches i'm talking about are in the car !!
one either side of rear seat .
btw , in uk RHD cabrio the opening levers (at top of screen) are :
as you're in car , one to left of screen locks in position for passenger to use as grab-handle . to open it , you have to ress the built-in safety switch
on right side (drivers) there is no locking switch , you just pull it down to lower roof
are your cabby's like this ????
