Another street race ends in disaster...

Did you all hear about the street race that happened in Toronto recently? Some kids in an MX-3 were racing some other kids in a Ford Exploder and the Exploder lost control, skidded off the road and hit a pedestrian who was a kid from the SAME SCHOOL THAT THEY KNEW and was killed instantly.
Apparently the poor kid never knew what hit him and the Exploder ended up on its roof.
Charges...obviously, are pending.
They were all about 17 years old I believe. Happened in Scarborough I think, just caught it on the news the other day and the follow up story on the news last night. Here's the link to the follow up story: http://www.pulse24.com/News/Top_Story/20011129-006/page.asp

Re: Another street race ends in disaster... (Red Baron Golf)

I'm not trying to change the subject, but I guy I work with's sister lives in Hamilton, and on Wednesday night (I think?), some drunk guy crashed his car into the shoe store underneath her apartment. Scary.
Re: Another street race ends in disaster... (trevorrr)

this was a red light race..not an organized night street race..
one..who races an SUV? if you that stupid..then you asking for it...I feel bad for the familes but I don't want this to get people to have an even darker view of the street racers...I have never seen with my eyes an accident like this at an street race.

Ummmm.....what are you talking about???
What is an organized night street race? Is it legal?
Re: Another street race ends in disaster... (Bob Roberts)

Okay, it's out of place, but I went to high school exactly down the street from there, only 11 years ago, and almost exactly nobody had a car, or even borrowed the car, to go to school. We all took the TTC. Now, it is sactimonious, but also true, that this is why I (and others) wasn't allowed to have one then, or even allowed to borrow it (not that I could have) at that age. I must have asked a billion times, but now that I'm past it, and have got older, it makes more sense.

These days its the parents showing how well they can provide for their kids. When I was 16 we were lucky to have a beet up old pieced of junk like a "Hondamatic".

A race in the middle of the night (past 2am) in a desolate road, in a desolate
part of town.
Legal? it it was, there would be no need to have it late at night, in a desolate road
and in a desolate part of town

Safe? No, but what race is really safe.
Safer than a red light rice? Yes.

I heard about this and now everytime I line up with someone, I have to worry that a cop will bust me even harder now. I feel sorry for the family of the person who was killed and I'd like to get my hands on the two punks who have ruined street racing for everybody.
By the way, I beat a 92-95 MR2 tonight easily off the line tonight.

I guess you just don't get it do you?
Racing is illegal. I almost hope you get busted. I also hope no one gets hurt because you think it is ok to race on public roads. Anything can happen if you aren't on a closed course. Even if you are the best driver on the planet.

Re: Another street race ends in disaster... (Bob Roberts)

hey bob..when did they get computers in the geratric ward?
Re: Another street race ends in disaster... (BlownoffGTI)

Hey man...if you're slagging Bob then you're slagging me too 'cause we're the same age.
The point he's trying to make is that it's STUPID to race anywhere, anytime on a public road. Regardless of the time, or the place because there IS no time and place for it.
I'll admit...I've done it in the past. But with 2 kids...well let's just say that I don't want to leave them without a father. Nor would I want anything to happen to my kids if they were minding their own business and walking home from school!!!

Gee.......to think I toned down my original post and I still got insulted

Just wait ten years and you'll understand completely what I feel. If you are very unlucky, someone YOU care about will be involved in a racing accident and you will understand sooner and better than I do.

Re: Another street race ends in disaster... (Bob Roberts)

Everyone that is on this board has street raced at one time or another. Everyone has sped up to get in front of someone. There are always different levels of racing but we all do it. Accidents happen and people get hurt but it will not keep me from street racing. I race at the tracks but sometimes I want to race the guy next to me.
Maybe the Explorer was running on Firestone tires.
Re: Another street race ends in disaster... (JsnVR6Corrado)

I guess i will have to join the old farts club even though i am only 28.. I have seen cars in pieces as a result of street races, and so i have a fairly dim view of them.
I seem to remember in some cities, the cops and the cities were getting together with the racers, and providing areas for it to be done. The cops would sometimes join in.. Honestly though, the last time i heard about that was about 3 years ago, so i don't know if those types of programs are still being used to keep things fun, but slightly safer..
i have to admit though, the look on someone's face when you pass them at double the limit is priceless(yes, i was the passenger)

Why did I buy a GTi then, Mabye I'll go buy a Buick for my next car and, I am the best driver on the planet!
Smoking pot is also illegal!

They are doing that here in Portland actually. On the race track. $20 entrance fee, winner takes the pot.

What's your point?!
I don't smoke pot or anything else either!
Re: Another street race ends in disaster... (Bob Roberts)

This seems to be turning into a flaming war. I agree we ALL have raced at some point, be it on the track, highway or red light but there are times when it is just stupid (such as this event). As we all know SUV do NOT handle like a car & with an aggressive drive behind the wheel (with little experience, years of driving) your just asking for trouble. I'm not trying to bad mouth the younger drivers out there (been one myself, so has everyone else), hell it could happen with the older or geratric drivers too. And to add to this, its the middle of the day, with traffic & pedestrians (including children) walking the sidewalks...
I believe the start of this thread was to remind people of the tragic events that could & usually do happen illegal street racing. It is your choice to do it or not, but do not bring innocent bystanders into it aswell...

you wouldn't get it anyway

there have been more accidents from people drive normal that people racing.
Playing cat and mouse on the highway is fine as long as you don't start cutting people off withing a foot of their bumper..and a red light race at night is cool..as long as you put your high beams on and it not a busy area...if you race in downtown toronto of course your going to hit somebody.
I think if you use your head, it safe..if you don't...

I think you missed most of the point. All of it, sorry. "cat and mouse" is fine? Insane. See the picture in the paper? On TV? The tire tracks and snapped pole were on someone's lawn. Shall we have a list of acceptable criteria to race? NO! It will never work. I can't believe the things I'm reading here. It's not just you, but it was a really big contribution. You don't have to defend stupid people, they're not going to be your friends, and if they tried, you wouldn't want them.
