Any engines swap into a Miata?

Man, you guys got me thinking about picking up a Miata with that other post...Everyone said the only problem (if you can call it a problem) is no straight line speed. I like to have my straight line speed AND my kick ass handling. So what engine could I possibly swap into the Miata? And no, i don't want a american V8 powered Miata, as cool as that may be.
Maybe just turbo the stock engine? Hmmm...maybe a FD twin turbo engine...

I know the Miata is available with a factory turbo in Japan. However, I don't know of that motor is the same motor in North America just with no turbo. If it is, I'd turbo it. If not...maybe swap in the turbo motor from Japan.
Lastly...if you want a stupid amount of horsepower, the Mega Monster Miata is the only way for you.

ford V8s. from 5.0 mustang had been install in Miata..
13b from RX7
very popular in Japan.
but the car is too small for BIG horse power.

Stick with the original engine. The Monster Miata has the stock internals!

There's a guy with a turbo miata in west michigan that comes to the auto-x's. That car is fast like a rocket. I wouldn't bother with a swap, just buy a turbo.

There are also supercharger kits, which are better if you are going to use it for autoX. No turbo-lag and less parts to buy.

I heard once that for 10k, Ford will fit a V8 under the hood.

Rotary power - doesn't throw off the balance of the car.

Rotary, baby. Sweetness.

Ford stuffed a Duratec V6 in one: http://www.miata.net/news/v6.html
Re: Any engines swap into a Miata? (mx5er)

forced induction baby, either the jrsc or a turbo
i'm considering either doing my mutant crx or getting a miata and playing with it, i just haven't made my decision yet...
Re: Any engines swap into a Miata? (AndrewT)

Hey guys, thanks for the replies. a 13b sounds VERY tempting...but turbo probably sounds like the best idea. Are there any good miata message boards around? Thanks!

You should be able to find a 13B TurboII for $1k-$1.5k, depending on where you buy it from.
Of course, you still need the tranny.
If you pull the 13B/13B TurboII engine, you'll need to get the tranny, also.
The Type M tranny works with the regular 13B(weaker tranny), and the Type R tranny works the with the TurboII version.
The Type R tranny is pretty much the same in the 2nd and 3rd gens. That's right, the same engine made for 182hp in 87 handles the 3rd gen's 255hp without batting an eye.

It's actually made to hold lots of HP (I havn't heard about any 3rd gens running 400hp grenading their trannies, have you?)
The 13B TurboII is good for 200hp with just a boost controller.
Any major mods will yield you lots of HP. Think aftermarket FC(fuel controller), new turbo, FMIC, street port, and you're looking at 350hp
Of course, 350hp in a Miata would be downright scary, especially since it would still be able to handle, with the nice light 13B

Wonder if Mazda will come out with a factory rotary Mitata/MX-5 before long. Oh, and why not take the Miata/MX-5 chassis and drivetrain and develop a compact (Sentra-sized) sports sedan out of it, with a rotary option. YEE HA!

I second that. There's a turbo'd Miata here in town that was an autocross car before a Micron engineer bought it. Now it's more of a daily driver for the summer. His second summer car is a 911 TT.
