Any of you guys replace your throwout bearing at home?

I have an idea on how to do it but am looking for some testimonials as to build confidence I just did a clutch at home but that was more a physical PIA than technical. So lets hear it. It is for a 97 2.0.
thanks!

Come on someone help this poor sap out.
Re: Any of you guys replace your throwout bearing at home? (Fast16v)

Honestly, it shouldn't be harder than doing the clutch (I've done a couple other front wheel drive cars but not the VW). But, as you now know, you should always replace it along with the clutch.

It did but the trowout is not accessable even witht he clutch and all its parts removed. It is located at the opposite end of the tranny. You can remove it with the tranny still in the car. I know it isn't hard but I am just looking for some trstimonials.

how did you change your clutch with the tranny still in the car?

He's saying the throwout bearing is replaceable with the tranny still in the car...

There is a green cap at the driver's side end of the tranny. Once this is removed you can gain access to the bearing.

Doesn't the shaft stick thru the throwout-bearing and into the clutch disc? How on earth could you ever remove the throwout-bearing with the shaft in the way?
Here is a pic of my tranny outside my house when I was replacing the clutch. Mine's a VR6, but I'm not sure how different your 2.0 would be. That shaft slides thru the clutch disc, so I'm not sure how you can actually remove the bearing without removing the tranny.

my friend did it to his gti, its easy, all you need is a new green cap that goes on the end of the tranny. just take off the driver side wheel, then all you do is disconnect the clutch cable from the fork on the front of the tranny. Then just pry off the green cap. then with some pliers or something skinny you can just pull the throughout bearing out. put in the new throughout bearing put on the new cap, reatatch the clutch cable to the fork, and put your wheel back on, your done. I should note this was done on a car with a manually adusted clutch cable, not sure how much harder it will be to take off the clutch cable on a car with a self adjusting clutch cable. HTH

The above pic is of an O2A tranny, totally different design! The TO bearing on that cannot be replaced with the tranny installed, the 020 is different though.
Remove the clutch cable and "green" tranny endcap. Pull the clutch release lever down and look into the endcap. You will see where the release lever goes into the tranny and where the finger for the lever touches the bearing. There might be a spring in there that you have to remove if you can't remove the bearing and hold the clutch release lever out of the way at the same time. I used two screwdrivers to pull the last one I did out. It's really simple once you see it for the first time.
Good luck
