I was going to do the ABA half-swap,but since I was convinced to part with my block(for a good price),and was able to pick up a comp. '88 Audi 80 motor with only 100K for $100(runs GREAT too, even better than when the ABA was running),I am going the 3A route instead. It looks like I will have to buy much less parts, and make less mods with the 3A than ABA.And yes, even though it may not make as much power than the ABA motor,it is still a 2.0L. So, has anybody done this swap;and if so,please give me your info & breakdown on the install.I had a few other ideas on this swap as well;tell me what you think about these: 1)installing the COMPLETE motor;switching the F/I to drivers' side 2) installing the COMPLETE motor, but adapting the I/M with hose & pipe,to keep F/I on pass. side(
) A) with either 1 or 2,fitting the comp. harness from the Audi 80 in my car to take advantage of the CIS-Motronic (
) or....3) screw all that, just use the 3A block. Will I need a different oil pan & oil pump to do this job??( I heard about that somewhere)I already have the ign. dist. from the 80,so I'm all set there. What else will I need to do?? I really apreciate your advice on this, and on previous requests i made,as I was sure about doing the ABA job,now my plans have changed.THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!!

Re: Anybody swap in a 3A Audi motor in a A2 GTi??? (junkyardjockey)

With the 3a just put the block in with a 1.8 gti head.Dont use anything else. Also you can just use the pan from you 1.8 and you just need the oil pick up for the 1.8 not the whole pump.I just used the Audi pan but the standard pan would be better.,For the breather i just used a hose to the atmosphere.I didnt have any problems there.

Oh and by the way..the ABA is no more powerful than the 3a..They are both rated the same power.Horsepower is in the head. The 2.0 head in Europe is the same as the old gti head here. Crossflow is for North America.

Im pretty sure the ABA is rated to have 10 foot pounds more torque than the 3A.
Im curious as to the exact details that need to be taken care of for the 3A block only swap...like the dizzy not working on the ABA/1.8 combo.

Re: Anybody swap in a 3A Audi motor in a A2 GTi??? (GTIRACER2.0t)

Thank you for your help GTI racer!! As far as the headgasket,do I use a 16V or 8V 2.0L one??This is nice that I get to keep my v-pulleys & a 1.8L timing belt.Do I just use a reg. 8V clutch setup?? I plan on having my flywheel lightened & balanced, when I add the 4K tranny to this swap project.Oh I didn't tell you;this combo is going in my Hobby stock car this year;I race the 86 GTi at a paved 3/8 mile oval track up here in NYS.I didn't have any of these goodies last year, and I kept pace with the rice boys. Now,all they will see will be my 2 taillights!!! A dual outlet manifold & downpipe will complement this outfit, and the "icing on the cake" will be a choice of a 266,268,270,or 276 deg. cam.I currently run 10.7:1 CR(with a .030" shaved head),and use Sunoco 94 60/40 with 110 racing fuel. Will my CR remain the same mated to the Audi block?? It was 10:1.What would you recomend for a cam for this purpose?? The rules don't say I can't run a hot cam,it just has to appear stock.A loping motor will draw the attention of the tech inspector, which I want to avoid. It has to sound close to stock until I get out on the track, then I'm home free!!!Yes I know the ABA has a little more torque than the 3A,but I will more than make up for that shortfall(see all above!)A2RicedGTI, in order to put your 1.8L I/D in a ABA block, you have to get the larger dist. gear & adapter ring(hole in ABA is bigger than HT or other 1.8L's).OR,pull the I/S from the 1.8L,have it machined down at the right spot(so rod #4 can clear it),and reinstall it in the ABA block.OR buy an Audi 80 I/D;which is already the right size for the block(and has the correct dist. gear),AND has the same "guts" as the VW I/D;just "plug n' play it" into the ABA.OR,just get a 3A block & save yourself all the trouble(like I did)Thanks again GTIRacer, and if you email me at [email protected] I'll send you some pics of me & my car."This Bud's for you"

The 3A requires the same type conversion parts as the ABA plus you have to swap the oil pan/pickup so it is not an easier swap, esp. in an A2.

The 3A baffling is not correct for a transverse engine but to each his own. I know it is easy to swap, I was pointing out the 3A swap is not "much easier" than the ABA swap.

Re: Anybody swap in a 3A Audi motor in a A2 GTi??? (junkyardjockey)

I am in the middle of a 3a swap myself. I am having some problems with the ignition system. The 2L motor I found did not have the distributor so I used one from an ABA but I only got spark from cyl. 1 and 2. Closer inspection of the distributors reveled that the ABA distributor only has one opening in the trigger wheel whereas the 1.8L has 4 openings in the trigger wheel. So now I need to find out if the ABA dist. can be modified or if i have to find a 3a dist.
Any help on this would be awesome!!!

Modify it(make 4 windows) or swap the window from a non ABA dist. or the guts from a non-KS dist.
