Anyone been to Spain? What should I do with my Jetta?

I am in the military, and am headed to Spain in a couple months. I am looking for some insight as to whether I should bring my 2001 Jetta.
I don't know if I will have to pay any taxes or modify my car to meet their regualtions.
I am also wondering if it would be beneficial to sell my car here, and buy a new VW in Germany, as I heard you can get them cheap. I don't know how that would work either if I tried to bring it back to the states.
Thanks for any help you can give.
p.s. I used to post a lot here back in the day. Is Rockstar still around?

Its 1:34 PM on the East Coast.

you should either store it over here or sell it. look into how much it would be to send one over there vs storage. (if you store it you will have a car with low mileage when you come back)
If you buy a car over in europe, you can't bring it over in america unless you bring a second one for crash tests. It's not worth the headache. I know someone who brought a civic 5 doors from spain, eventhough the customs told him over the phone that there would not be any problems, he cant keep it, he has to either destroy it or send it back to Spain. He got a couple of mounths to think about it because of the clerk's error over the phone. Meaning, even if you get info over the phone, look into it, don't believe everything.

Roger Moore would know about taking a car over-seas and back. Check out http://bambergvr6.50megs.com. I'm sure he would have some insight.

I would reccomend buying a car in Spain or Germany. Gasoline prices are sick in Spain and you would save a silly amount of money with a Diesel. Depending on where you go in Spain, you'll never get to use the power of a tuned car. The streets in the cities are nothing like the streets of America. They're tiny over there. You'll love Spain though. Good Luck

Personally If it were me I would sell my car(dependent on how long I was going for) and buy a euro spec one in Spain or Germany. Just think of all the goodies you get on the Euro models
. Don't try to import/export if you want an easy life! BTW Spain is lovely, I know, my parents live there and despite what someone else said, there are some great roads if you know where to look, with plenty of twisties just watch out for the reverse cambers on some of them, they can literally throw you off the road if your not careful...they haven't the best road builders believe me! Whatever, you'll have fun. Try and get down to the South, South East coast...Costa Brava/Blanca/Callida.........Oh, and watch out for their driving..it SUCKS!

i lived in rota for about 5 years. ( of course i was about 5 when we moved over there )
seriously i think you should consider selling the us spec jetta and picking up a euro spec car. what are the laws on importing if you're in the military? i think they're a little more lenient on that aren't they??
Re: Anyone been to Spain? What should I do with my Jetta? (justin111)

I lived in Rota for a few years and I would recommend buying a car over there. (lile junker) Alot of American cars get broken into out in town.
Re: Anyone been to Spain? What should I do with my Jetta? (justin111)

I was stationed at Zaragaza for 3 years. Had a one year old Spanish car for a year, it was terrible (no ac, no power, broke down alot). Bought a 3 year old US Rabbit GTI there from a teacher and had zero problems. Gas prices aren't a problem, you can buy gas on base or get Esso coupons (comparable to US prices). You shouldn't have to pay any taxes, visiting forces are covered under the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA). I had a Ford Tuarus SHO in England for 3 years and had zero problems also. The military pays for shipping a car to and from overseas and it doesn't have to be the same car. Spain has some small roads, but a Jetta is plenty small. It shouldn't require any major modifications. My Rabbit didn't require any mods for Spain, my SHO had a couple minor light mods for England. The military has contracters that take care of the shipping, to include all the paperwork, it is very easy. I would definatly take your Jetta. What base are you going to, possibly Moron or Rota? Good Luck, you will enjoy Spain.

Dude!! If you are going to be in Europe, I would seriously consider getting the Golf TDI 150. I drove one last summer. It is really fast (AMAZING torque) and has practically no turbo lag.
I am originally from France, which like Spain is the European Union. I know for sure that they will charge you VAT (Value Added Tax). That means you will pay around 7% of your car's original value. Furthermore, there will be import tax (heavy). Then you will have to retrofit certain parts (I am not sure about this) to fit EU standards. Finally, you will have to go through inspection.
It is not worth it. Go for the TDI. It has nothing to do with the TDI available here. SOOOO much faster.

Thanks for all the responses. I am in the Air Force, and am going to Moron AB. I think I will just take my car over there so I don't have to go through the hassle of selling it and buying another one over there. And I don't have to pay to ship it, and I don't think I have to pay the taxes in Spain, which is a big plus.

Oh. I get it. You have special circumstances because of the Air Force. Well, if you can ship it over for free and not have to pay anything there, that's good. However, I doubt you'll be able to sell it too easily, but I don't really know. If you plan on selling it there, I would first inquire about that. You may find you'll have to keep it and then bring it back here to sell it.
