The first time I tried this, I thought I'd made a grave error too - after figuring out the problem, it's just a matter of patience and some physics.

You're on the right track - use the jack to position the transmisison. Eventually you'll lift the trans high enough that it'll line up with the motor and the starter bolts will slide in place. Remember that by removing the starter and it's bolts, you've effectively removed the front motor mount. This means that you'll have to finagle the trans, engine and starter bolts around to get it all back together.
