Ok i have an 88 1.8l 16v gti. It won't start, turns over real slow...looked through bentley and cleaned connectiuons as suggested...nothing...Then removed starter (following bentley instructions) to check condition. It looked fine. As i was undoing the bolts for it, the tranny was dropping down...Now i cannot get the starter bolted back in because the bolts don't line up...not even close, about an inch off!!! What the hell is wrong here??? I tried to put a jack under there and lift the tranny back into place, but it didn't work... just started to lift everything...Now i'm worse off then when i started

HAs anyone experienced this???

You're on the right track - use the jack to position the transmisison. Eventually you'll lift the trans high enough that it'll line up with the motor and the starter bolts will slide in place. Remember that by removing the starter and it's bolts, you've effectively removed the front motor mount. This means that you'll have to finagle the trans, engine and starter bolts around to get it all back together.
The first time I tried this, I thought I'd made a grave error too - after figuring out the problem, it's just a matter of patience and some physics.

It can be a PITA sometimes. Just be patient and keep at it.

well i fixed it. The problem was, the car was broken down in my driveway, which is stone, so i couldn't even get the car up on jackstands. To make a long story short, my buddy helped me push it into my garage and we fixed it last night... car is runnin fine now. thanks for the reponses http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
