Anyone ever had this problem?

619 Views 12 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Jason_Jetta_2.0
I've got a 97 Golf and it won't start. I don't know if it's the battery or the starter or what. It's ticking when I try to start it and then my alarm goes off. Has this happened to any of you, or does anyone want to venture a guess as to what's going on? Any help appreciated. Thanks!

Sounds like you have a dead battery to me. The starter clicks when it doesn't have enough juice to turn the motor over, and your alarm goes off cause it thinks the car is being stolen. Get a jump from somebody (or an Optima
).

I agree with pumpkin02, it's the battery. I had the same problem, minus the alarm going off. Buy a new battery and if that's not it, post back here for more help

Thanks, pumpkin. Yeah, that's what I'm hoping. We tried to jump it, though, and it didn't take. I don't think we did it wrong...

If the battery is really jacked it will not jump, but if it starts then stalls, the alternator could be bad as well.

You could always just replace the whole system.
If you tried to jump it and it wouldn't work, then I would think it's the starter. It sounds like it's getting some juice, but it won't catch. Have you tried rolling it to get it started? If it works and it continues running, then it probably isn't the alternator or the battery.
Maybe try to get it to an alternator shop for a free test???
Good luck!

Re: Anyone ever had this problem? (megf5)

that happened to me about a month ago...
tried to jump it and it still wouldnt work...
if you got stick i suggest push starting it...
it took me about 20-30 minutes hooked up to a chevy 1500 to get enough juice to get it to crank...
i bought a new battery...that was the only problem...

Mine's an AT, so no rolling for me.

Now there's the REAL question: do I put in the battery myself? Haha, yeah right.

Bring your battery to Pep Boys.
They will test it for free.
Then when they tell you it's dead buy an Optima

I used to have starter problems all the time with my Rabbit. One time I jumped directly to the starter. You may just be getting a bad ground when trying to jump.
