my old man runs 0-40 synthetic in pretty much everything around the house, from the bulldozers to the lawn tractor...its used as a transmission fluid as well as hydraulic oil too, in equipment everyday...
Im just wondering if anyone runs this oil in their vws?
or what do you run in the winter? its oil change time in about 5 of my mkIIs so Im curious as to what everyone else runs in the colder climate...Im thinking that the 20w50 may be a bit heavy for the severe weather we get up here...
any thoughts?

I used Mobil 1 0w40 for a few months in my 1.8T mk4. No problems and it ran very good.

it wasn't VW approved

i most recently used castrol syntec 5w40 and loved it, trying some Total (ELF) 5w40 right now

VW dealer here recommends 5W30 here in Northern Ontario... it gets f'n cold...(though not as cold as Edmonton no doubt) I have a regular ol' 8v 1.8 golf.

Im thinkin about the 5w30 for the cars I wont run synthetic in...noisy lifters suck tho, especially with the thinner oil...I just wish there was some kinda happy medium somehere lol...
as for the synthetic, I can just grab it from my pa and not worry about the outrageous pricetag on it...hate to watch it piss out on the ground tho is a couple of the cars...
