Anyone have advice reg. preping car for new paint??

501 Views 11 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  HIRVNMF
I'm sanding, adding primer, and fixing a few holes. Does anyone have any advice, tips reguarding preping your car for new paint? I could use any assistance to get the job done right.
Also, does anyone have any step by step pics? Finally, should I add undercoat paint inside the fender section? I started to prime it and decided to add undercoating all along the inside of the fender section both front and back. Together with the belly. Or should I leave it unprotected?
Thanks in advance. Frank

I am doing the same thing. Right now I have got a lot of the mud work done. Do not use undercoating it seals in moisture in 10 years your floor will rot out. Use por 15 or coreless. Nasty stuff but the area applied with this will never rust.

holes need to be welded and than filled
do not fill holes with putty
SEAL YOUR BODY WORK. body filler attracts moisture. I think its call PPG DP90...primer/sealer activator and sealer.
wet sand areas for a nice scratch free area
take your time

my advice is to actually learn what you are doing, before you do it. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

That's good advice. If you go ahead and do a "do it yurself" job you will get a car that looks like you did it yurself. Good Luck.

even if you do mess up(drips, etc.) you can always wet-sand it and just buff out where you sanded it. or just wet-sand the whole car once you're done, and go back and buff the whole thing. thats what i plan on doing.

Save yourself the hassle and take it to a bodyshop for a professional job.
I saw this program on Discovery Channel where they restored an E-type Jag. Working on the bodywork is an art form, it's amazing watching the bodyshop go through the processes of preping and respraying the car.
Before then I never realised/appreciated how much skill is involved, therefore didn't understand why a good bodyshop charges big bucks.
Of course if you're not so concerned about looks and just want to stop it rusting then go for it. I'll probably end up doing that with my Golf if it ever stops raining. As it seems to rain forever here (this is England afterall) my Golf will probably be rust dust by the time the rain stops.

Thanks guys for the comments. I know taking it to a pro shop would be best but I don't have mucho cash. I just thought preping it would be fun and an experience. if it looks bad, I'll just get a pro shop do add another couple of coats of primer etc...
Right know I have sended most of the car with 300 sandpaper. Next is 400. Finally, adding the primer. Just before I add any primer though, I want to add rust killer acid in certain sections so the rust never comes back.
The undercoating... some said it locks in moisture. How could it do that? The car is dry and the undercoating would add a barrier, wouldn't it? What else could I use besides PROP15? PROP15 is a rust killer isn't it? Anyway, after the primer, what do I use? A sealer? What do you mean, is it paint? Or a special kind of sealant before the paint?
I need all the help thanks. Frank
PS: I plug up my holes with fiberglass. It doesn't warp my panels and is solid like a rock. A bit of primer on to and it perfect. I plan to cover my side round marker holes with it.

Here is a forum where many of the questions you are asking are talked about. You can dig through old posts and then ask one. I can't believe how complicated stuff like picking a primer is. Tell us what happens...

That's what I was gonna say. Very important if you don't want those holes to show up in a year or so. Bondo will sink eventually. You also have to be careful of expansion of your metal when welding. A guy welded up my side molding holes on my rabbit without using a heat barrier putty of some type & you could see the metal raised by each weld.
