Anyone have the ever-elusive centrifugal Cam Timing Gear made by VW?

5909 Views 29 Replies 19 Participants Last post by  Dieder
I almost had my hands on one of these a few years ago, but someone bought it out from under me. It's a VW Factory-made 8v Cam gear that changes the advance/retard based on RPM. There is a counterweight that actually changes the cam timing based on engine RPM.
Does anyone have one of these and possibly have any pictures? This would be sweet to try to re-make!

I'm pretty sure it was not factory. Franco ( or something like that) made one, he even had an ad in the back of European Car. I think it gave 1 hp for $ 400.

You are correct. I remember seeing a writeup on it. Made by Franco and only gave 1 or 2hp. Also very expensive. You will be much better off and have far more money left if you just get an adjustable cam gear. You can more the power band around a little and fine tune it.

I have heard of the Franco unit. Never seen one in person though..... cam gears give you no power, they helps you shift the power band in the rev band. This unit was designed to give you both retard and advance automatically depending what part of the rev band you were in. Good concept, price not so good.

Here read it all for yourself , I just found the link : http://thorin.adnc.com/~figf/

looks pretty sweet, does anyone make one for the 16v

Hey! I've got a cool idea! Let's tell the customers about how simple it is right before we list the price! YaY~!
"The automatic sprocket is relatively simple. It consists of: a gear housing, drive plate, two fly weights pivoted on needle bearings, two slider bushings and two equilibrium springs. There are four moving parts in the unit.
The cost of the product is $300 plus shipping. This includes a six month warranty on parts and labor"

g602drjetta in g60 forums has one on his g60 jetta. i dont know who made his but he got massive gains all over the board. like 10 plus wheel power. ask him. he said it was like having a vtec.

Almost a 2 second gain in the 1/4mile!
I know you cant always trust product litature, hell they could have found a drag strip on the side of a mountian for the second test, but thats alot to claim!
someone wanna copy and host their time slips?

I have heard about this, Dave (Phobia16V) was telling me about it. Hopefully he can elaborate.
Anyways the Franco site hasnt been updated since 1997, and the phone # doesnt work. Some of the guestbook entrys are new tho?

0-60 in 12.6 and 9.8 secs? Why are we driving these slow POS? I find that hard to believe.... http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif

All interesting statistics. Now I'd like to see some scientific data. I definately like the concept though. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

that thing is POOP, i have an older vw book from circa 87 thats got all the hot pieces in it, and pix of all the old tuner cars that neuspeed and autotech made and ish, and they call that thing poop
Re: Anyone have the ever-elusive centrifugal Cam Timing Gear made by VW? (panic)

Damn I could use some low end torque.
And don't gimme dat get a 2.0 bottom end ish either.

I ASSume this was a VWMS part? Ever used in production? How much did it go for?
Someone has to know more... wheres g602drjetta at?
Re: Anyone have the ever-elusive centrifugal Cam Timing Gear made by VW? (Dieder)

if you look at the specs on the motor (from the website), it is a 1.8 8v with a 276 cam. That is a huge cam for up top HP, so it starts out with no torque. Then the sprocket is able to move the torque to the bottom end so some real gains can be made.
I think this product truly does what it says. It advances and retards your timing based on engine RPM. g60jetta2dr (Llewie) really likes his because it gives him increased HP in the bottom of the rev range, while keeping the up top HP from a big cam.

Re: Anyone have the ever-elusive centrifugal Cam Timing Gear made by VW? (Dieder)

I'm here. Dieder Imed me.
I am currently running the Franco cam gear.
I have the before and after dyno pulls on the wall next to my monitor. Yup I gained no horsepower.
I did however go from 184.2 ft/lbs peak to 204.6 ft/lbs.
Before the cam gear my motor had a torque bulge above 175 ft/lbs from 3400 rpm to 4700 peaking at 184.2 ft/lbs.
After the cam gear the torque bulge above 175 ft/lbs is from 2300 rpm to 5200 rpm peaking at 204.6 ft lbs.
Before the cam gear my motor made 150 ft/lbs from 2500 rpm to 3400 rpm then ramped up above 175 ft at 3500 rpm. Now my graph is above 150 ft/lbs when the dyno starts plotting at 1700 rpm.
I very pleased with it.

were are they, ill try it for 300.00.
Re: Anyone have the ever-elusive centrifugal Cam Timing Gear made by VW? (16vpower)

Is this for 8v applications or 16v too?
Re: Anyone have the ever-elusive centrifugal Cam Timing Gear made by VW? (Blitz16v)

Same concept as honda's Vtech, variable valve timing. But the franco unit dosn't change enough to realize any real gains. Read Greg Ravens book.
And Blitz I'm pretty sure its olny for 8Vs, this things pretty old. I'd rather paint my intake manifold and have It will look a 10hp gain for $10.
Re: Anyone have the ever-elusive centrifugal Cam Timing Gear made by VW? (G60Jetta2dr)

Can you post that dyno run? That is a bunch of torque gain at the wheels
I mean that is 20 ft/lbs of torque to the wheels peak. That is a sh!t load for a cam gear.
