Without any mods you will run out of ponies rather quickly. My top speed was 190km/h until I got my chip/cam/intake/exchaust/p&p and now its closer to 215-220km/h. Beyond that you will need major mods.

With a new exhaust and P flo I could only push it to 190 kph. Good luck getting higher without some serious cash!

2002 UK Golf brochure quotes 121 mph (195 kp/h) for a GTI 2.0L.
UK petrol is 95 RON octane, so that may have an effect.
Quoted unladen weight (incl. driver) is 2534 lbs (1149 kg) for the 3 door and 2611 lbs (1184 kg) for the 5 door.
Take it from there, though that does fit pretty well with your thoughts originally.

I've had mine up to 133 mph, (214 km/h) that's with an upsolute chip, neuspeed cat-back (resonator removed) and p-flow.
(oh yeah, and a slushbox)

I've had my 99.5 2.0 Golf (door, 2 people inside) up to ~200km/h. That's what the speedometer said anyway.
I ran out of gears, but I know thats as far as it woulda gone.. it had no more power left, and took a looong time to get there.

I had mine well into the 130's....136 I believe was what I topped at, which point the needle just kinda moved VERY...VEERRRRRY slowly...
