I think it's the CX-DP610, but not sure. Also, I read somewhere that an adapter is needed. Sorry, I know this has been asked, but search is disabled and I didn't find it after several pages of looking.

Re: Anyone know which CD changer works with the '02 Monsoon? (wookie1)

with this system go to any peripheral dealer and get a plug called the vwasx. then get the standard alpine 6 disc changer. then you would have a cd changer for your 02 monsoon system. these two parts run about 310 or 320 together.

Re: Anyone know which CD changer works with the '02 Monsoon? (wookie1)

wookie,
Your memory serves you right. The Panasonic CX-DP610 6-disc changer is the aftermarket equivalent to the unit offered by VW. One place a number of us Vortexers have purchased this unit at is logjam.com:
http://store.yahoo.com/logjam/pancx.html
This unit costs $195.95 at logjam.
In addition to the changer, you will need to buy an adapter (to match the style of connector pre-wired in your trunk to the connector on the changer). There are two different connectors:
VWPCPAN6: all CD changer functions (including mix) work. $49.95 at logjam
VW98PAN6: all CD changer functions (except for mix) work. $29.95 at logjam
Here is a helpful site that explains how to save beaucoups bucks by installing it all yourself:
http://roadsleeper.vwmafia.net/cdc.html
It is very easy to install. I recommend getting the brackets and screws from the dealer (~$15 for a complete set of brackets and screws) to secure the changer in the slot in the trunk (see roadsleeper's site, the link above, for details). Note: some people have reported that there is a plug covering the actual connector that is attached to the pre-wired cable in the trunk; apparently this plug is there to protect the actual connector. This plug is very cleverly disguised, such that some people have confused it with the connector. If this plug is there, it has to be removed before you attach the adapter.
Finally, you will hear the dealer mention that the head unit needs to be specially programmed to adequately accept the CD signal. I recommend you hook it up yourself and listen to it before you consider having this done. For most of us, it has been unneccesary to have the dealer program the head unit. Furthermore, there should be no need for you to disconnect your battery in order to install the CD changer, nor should there be any need to re-enter your head unit's security control.
As llcaptive points out, you also have the alternative of installing an Alpine 6-disc changer. For this you will require a different adapter than the ones noted above. Blitzsafe makes such an adapter. For more info on this adapter, go to:
http://www.blitzsafe.com
The application guide is located here:
http://www.blitzsafe.com/blitz_appguide/BlitzAppGuide.pdf (you'll have to scroll down to the Volkswagen section)
I don't have any experience going this route, so this is all I am going to say on this subject.
There is a third option:
http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/...=0&s=0&g=65500&id=essential_info&i=581SCDVW44
I don't know anything about this unit. It appears from reading the blurb at the above site that you would not need an adapter for this unit. Even so, it is still more expensive than the Panasonic changer.
Hope this helps you,
Brian

quote:

And what about 02 D-DIN with Monsoon?
I read somewhere that the D-DIN has a different interface...

The HU has a different interface, the CD changer interface hasn't changed. I hooked up the 6 disc Panasonic last night. Took all of 10 minutes and works just fine.

Thanks.
So the head unit doesn't need to be reprogrammed?
How do you switch from playing the in-dash CD to CDs in the changer?
For the single-DIN unit, you can tell the head unit is pre-programmed
as it will indicate something that "no changer" when you hit the CD button.
But on my d-DIN unit, I can't get the "no changer" message to appear...

No, there's no reprogramming, you just plug it in and go. The CD button acts as a toggle, press it once for the HU, press it again for the changer.
The only thing I've found is that the changer won't play CD-RW's like the HU will, but that was a longshot anyway and it does play CD-R's just fine, so I'm happy.
