i guess the "flip up" lights are out of date, but i still like them
for example, the mr2, ferrari, ae86, supra....
even for the NSX, an updated style with non-flip up...
although the aerodynamics might be a problem, i still like them
i think the only flip up light cars today are corvettes and trans ams...

They'll be back one day

Lots of cars had hide-away lights in the 60s. Right now the flip up lights are out. Dont forget the 1st gen Miata, some RX7s, Porsche 924/44. lots of Ferraris, lots of Japanese cars too now that I think of it.

It's a pain to get the l/r beams even this way. Whenver I worked on aligning it flush to the hood/bumper, I worried "If that thing closes on my hand, it's going to take my fingers off", so reattaching the battery made it close, that was a handy way to avoid walking back to the drivers' side door. They look great closed, but in every other way I don't miss them.
Oh ya, all RX-7s had pop-up lights. So did my daytona... and the RX-7.

I didn't miss it when a popup headlight would get stuck or the motor would stop functioning
or when I rear ended some truck on slippery grating and my insurance bill was sky high because I had to have all the light mechanics replaced in addition to the front bumper and hood!

YES. My '87 Accord had those. I loved 'em. You could leave them up if you wanted to. I would have people tape it coming down the road just to see them flick up and have the lights come on

i own 2 cars with the pop-ups and if i had to buy a pre water-cooled 911.. it would be a slantnose that has the pop-up lights. the 928 and 968 had them but they were "exposed" like the Lamborghini Miura's. this made them easier to clean.
pop up lights rule! the only downside is that if you want to "flash" your lights quickly at an oncoming car... it takes a while for them to rotate up. but the "cool" factor way outweighs that.

Here is an ugly example of the one I had. Finding a pic of one with the lights up is a bitch.

Saab had a rather unique method for raising and lowering the lights. There was a big lever under the dash (like the old parking brake in American cars). When you pulled it out, the lights went up and came on. Pretty fool proof.

Toyota 2000GT had both. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif I was pissed when I found out how rare this car is. I really would have loved to get my hands on one.

Yes! I miss them so much! They're sort of an icon of my childhood. They're troublesome, but if I had to choose, I'd go with the Saab method. Simple and reliable. A concept that has escaped most automakers, unfortunately. They'll be back someday, as a styling excercise, but who cares??

Generally on cars were both fixed and popups were available, I prefer the fixed. I've always thought the AE86 Levin looked so much more aggressive than the Trueno. I prefer '80s/early '90s style cars to a lot of newer designs, though, so I like a lot of cars with popups. I'll take a BMW 8-series any day.

My first car a 93 ford probe gt had them, and actually i kinda liked them, it you adjusted them to go up about halfway, they looked low, and the car looked sleepy, it was kinda cool

What I really miss is laughing at all those "one-eyed mongrels" out on the road whose mechanisms have taken a dump.

Actually i caught the new NSX during this past week's autoshow in Baltimore and i was impressed even though it didn't have the flip up lights. Still looked nice. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

My rx7 had "flash to pass" (FTP) lights, so flashing wasn't a problem.
Flip up lights are great. Really gives the car a clean look when they're down http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
