I've searched the archives and there are two opinions:
- piece of cake
- "need special tools, see dealer"
I tend to believe the former, but would welcome some advice from people who have done it. I'm replacing my 4 spoke wheel and bag with a 3 spoke wheel and bag.
Thanks.
Re: Anyone succeed in changing the steering wheel/airbag? (danix)
You just need a mutipoint tool/socket to remove and replace the weird nut that holds the wheel to the steering column. It looks like a big torx bit. I'm doing the same swap this weekend.
Re: Anyone succeed in changing the steering wheel/airbag? (danix)
I checked Bentley and it seems pretty easy to change the wheel/bag, depending on what that special bolt is that holds the wheel on.
The airbag itself is another matter - $312.43 list price at my local dealer (but reduced from $600+ that it used to be!) Ouch...
Re: Anyone succeed in changing the steering wheel/airbag? (danix)
removing the airbag from the wheel is the tricky part, you need a small flat blae screwdriver to release it from the spring clips.
The wheel itself is held on with a 12mm 'triple square' bolt, its the same one that is used on the cylinder head bolts of older dubs
Re: Anyone succeed in changing the steering wheel/airbag? (jaymes)
If it's a triple square, it's the same type of bolt that holds the CV joints in place, at least on the older VWs and Audis, so I definitely have a set of those. Thanks!
