ask this question in the 8v forums or in the a2jetta/golf forum! you will get a lot of info.
I can answer some of your question. When I had my jetta 8v I only have a match ported, because the p&p is very expensive if your not doing it by yourself, also you dont need a new head if it's not leaking and if it meet the spec.

I just saw something interesting last week, a 1.8L gti engine stock internals, header and single 2 barrel sidedraft weber carb on an engine dyno showed 95hp same engine with a race ported head, wild cam, twin sidedraft webers 150hp. Ain't that something to make you go Hmmm?

my digi 1.8 with 270 cam and a header was dynoed at 101.3 hp @ wheel. I have seen a UK based 1.8 with carb and race stage head dyno showed 190 hp @ crank. !!! I would be happy with 120 hp @ wheel.

I am working on an ABA swap for my 85 8 valver... 2.0ABA bottom end, race ported 1.8 solid lifter head, 286 cam, timing gear, Audi 4k intake manifold ported and polished, big throttle body, TT downpipe, CIS mods with a fifth injector.. I am guessing that it should emulate my buddy Ed's motor that he build with nearly the same specs that was about 125 hp at the wheels and a nice steep power curve.
I will post pics and specs when I am done! This is not going to be a project car, merely a fun car that I can drive daily and do some track time, etc....
