Re: Apparently Ford Explorer Mishaps Are Merely Operator Error (Ric Woodruff)

Nothing is anybody's fault anymore...especially when a rich corporation can be blamed.
I recall one of the original tread separation cases was a 1990!! Exploder running original tires w/over 100K miles on them.
MUST be the tire maker's fault

Especially if they were running at Ford's recommended tire pressure (about 10 psi under Firestones recommendation to Ford).

Yeah... the operator bought a piece of crap, top-heavy SUV, made by a company that has historically put substandard tires on their vehicles in an effort to fatten their bottom line.
I'd chalk that up to operator error.

didnt' they have that report showing what happens when the tires blow out and nothing happened....it was the idiot drivers who would cut the wheel sharply because they heard a noise causing the thing to tip over.

Yes but you can blame the corporation for not requiring a driving school to own an SUV. It makes perfect sense to me, the corporation is aware that their customers are usually not the best drivers on the road, they should take that information and apply it to their priducts.

I've done a lot of research about the 5000 brouhaha. There are interesting parallels:
1) The 5000 had been an "aspirational" import, the car people moved to after driving Cutlass Supremes (the pre-Yuppie upscale car of choice) for years.
2) What the 5000 also has is closer pedal spacing, which is a far change from what many Audi buyers were used to. Hence - some pedal misapplications.
The Explorer follows a similar track. Here is the first SUV that many people purchased - it was the first affordable one that was almost as refined as a car. SUVs, as a class, drive differently than passenger cars, and combined with tires that go POOF....
Just remember - for better or worse, products need to be designed to forgive a decent amount of foreseeable operator error....

EXACTLY. "Well, it's gotta be Ford/Firestone's fault here. I mean, my client did nothing but panic and cut the wheel sharply at 75 mph in an already top-heavy SUV. That's certainly a design flaw."
If any of you recall the accident down in Texas and the consequent lawsuit, IIRC there were SEVEN people in that truck. Last time I checked, there wasn't seating area for 7 people in those old Explorers. Not to mention the seat belts. I'd be very interested to hear how many of those injured in these accidents were wearing seat belts. And before anyone flames me for being heartless and uncaring, I'm just trying to see the entire picture, not just the picture the newspaper paints for us.

The government should implement drastic changes to Driver education. Driver training should include skid and spin recovery as well as teach drivers what to do when a tire blows out.

Amen.
I think anyone who bought an Exploder is defective.

Interesting factoid: first-generation Acura Legends also have a problem with unintended acceleration. The reason? Acura benchmarked Audi's pedal design.
Regardless of NTHSA's ruling, the real test will be the court of public opinion, not to mention all the civil suits (which I believe Ford is losing).
