I was doing some reading in the Bentley, and it mentioned it. I know in my old 88 golf the fan would still run sometimes after teh engine was off. I guess it's something like 10-15 minutes after the engine is shut off. I have yet to have the fan come on after shut down, so I'm assuming for some reason my jetta either: 1. isn't equipped 2. or hasn't been needed thus far.
any ideas?

yes they are, but it is controlled by a thermostat in the base of the radiator. it wont come on unless the temp is high enough.

Actually, on the 2.0L at least, isn't the fan operated off of the thermoswitch located to the left of the head? Mine is at least, unless I understand the purpose of that thermoswitch.

that sensor is for the cold start system. the sensor for the fans is in the base of the radiator.

Yea I know in the summer time, when I park and shut off my '92 GTi the fan will stay on for a couple of minutes. I've even stood outside during car meets and it will run then shut off, then heat up again and run somemore, then shut off. I would cycle like that for 20 minutes. Sorta like a turbo timer for a N/A car!

dubwerkz, the after-run system is controlled by the thermoswitch which is mounted on the front left corner of the 16V cylinder head, as you are facing the engine from the front. The Bentley manual discusses this on p11 of the Cooling System chapter. Check and make sure the wire is connected to the thermoswitch. Last summer, I had trouble with the wire on mine, the hoses above it were causing it to short out.
RavenGTi, you are correct that the thermoswitch at the base of the radiator turns the fan on in most situations. But the after-run system has it's own thermoswitch, which reads under hood temperatures and runs the fan for up to 15 minutes after shut-off.

Larry is right - the sensor for the 2 liter 16v at least is at the left front of the head.....with a wire running back into the car - this wire gets cut or metled a lot and the fans will not work or will run at wierd times if it gets grounded.....just fixed mine this past summer -
