As long as its not a Tiptronic, I think its fast enough.
I know I will catch hell for this, but I feel the 2.8 feels faster than a moderately chipped 1.8T. I had a GIAC 1.8T, and I feel the 2.8 is faster, smoother..maybe Im getting too old.
I test drove a 4motion Passat GLX Tip...and that felt slow to me. I then test drove the A4 2.8 5spd.
Guess which one I bought.

which 2.8 are we talking bout? 12v or 30v?
Re: Are 2.8 a4 quattros as slow as people saw they are?? (mrkrad)

30v
Re: Are 2.8 a4 quattros as slow as people saw they are?? (VRSICK)

Part of the "problem" is that the A4 is a lot smoother than most owners are use to, so they think it is slow.
Hey you can always supercharge it if you want more
. If you want my opinion, though, I think the 1.8T has a little more potential (well over 300hp), that is if you're willing to shell out the dough! Plus it's cool to beat those V8's with a 4-cylinder!

It depends on stick or automatic. I just got my 98 A4 2.8 30valve and they are supposed to do 0-60mph in the 7.5 seconds range which is pretty fast. It will outrun by 95 Passat Vr6 for sure.
I am sure the senior Audi guys here can jump in with the stats on the quattro vs front trak.
Re: Are 2.8 a4 quattros as slow as people saw they are?? (VRSICK)

Depends on your definition of slow. The 2.8 V6, like all of Audi's naturally aspirated engines, are pretty boooring. They will get the car moving though. On paper, my 2.8 12v has an output similar to VW's VR6. But in reality, the Audi engine lacks the punch of the VR6 and really feels kinda gutless below 3500 RPM. With my 5spd close-ratio gearbox I hit 120mph @ 5000 RPM in 5th. I could do better with taller gears.
I've driven the 2.8 30v before and things are much the same. There is a bit more torque down low--3000 RPMs in the 30v feels like 3700 in the 12v. It will get you up to speed as well, with the top end in the neighboorhood of 140 to 150mph, but it will do so without any drama. No neck snapping or anything like that. Just smoothness.
One thing the 2.8 definitely has over the 1.8T is that it's a known quantity as far as reliability. I went to the 1.8T forum here and not a single person had over 150k miles. I have over 200k hard driven, high speed miles and it's still pulling as strong as ever.

I test drove a quattro and yes I felt the difference in pick up. Not like my 2.8 is too much quicker, but enough that would anoy me on the majority of dry days, until I can afford the S4. Furthermore the 1.8 did feel slower then the 2.8 and is a heck of a lot more reliable. I didn't buy a 1.8 just because I was affraid of the condition of the turbo's. $3000 is expensive to replace. I bomb around in my fwd and never fear rain or snow here or even in mountain areas. If you have the power to push the quattro it would be great. With the extrta weight and distribution of torque to all wheels the quattro is slow!
My 2 cents.
Re: Are 2.8 a4 quattros as slow as people saw they are?? (CanaDN)

what is more reliable the 1.8T or 2.8??
And where do you see its $3000 to replace a single turbo(not turbos) on the 1.8T??how about a low mileage(almost new) for 300?

And of course you dont need Quattor, in Atlanta?!?! Wasnt it like 77 degress there last week

Yes I would say a NA engine is more reliable then a turbo engine. Why? Because turbo's run red hot and coke oil. Four cylinders have to do more work then 6. Putting in a used turbo? c'mon! How much is the labor on replacing a turbo? part 300 maybe labor...... ah... lots!
Everything is a trade off. Yes here in Atlanta I don't really need quattro. Which is why I bought fwd. However, others will say you are using the quattro in all steering and wet pavement conditions. I agree. However, It doesn't rain much here and I would rather save the weight and torque loss for extra power instead of awd.
It's all about the balance

Re: Are 2.8 a4 quattros as slow as people saw they are?? (VRSICK)

I was surprised to see in current R&T the 0-60 for an A4 3L 6speed at 7.7s. About the same as 1.8T.
The 2.8 12v A4s I test drove never felt particularly slow with the manual transmission.

7.7s??? thats horrible. Please tell me thats a mistake. How is the 3.0 slower than the 2.8???
Re: Are 2.8 a4 quattros as slow as people saw they are?? (damianp)

Those guys couldn't drive it then. On the German Audi site they give it 7.1 sec. 0-62mph and Audi usually tends to be conservative.
Re: Are 2.8 a4 quattros as slow as people saw they are?? (Pekka)

You must have misread the article in R&T... the 7.7 time is for a 2002 A4 3.0 Quattro with Tiptronic automatic. The tip is much slower than the manual. Car and Driver has the manual at 6.8

ok, I feel better now.

No, it is a manual 6 speed. I read somewhere that MT clocked it in 7.9s! 400 lbs heavier than previous A4...

i just sold my 98.5 2.8 qms. 0-60 was 7.1 in all the mags i saw. definitely a great cruising car w/ enuf power (above 130mph) . . . well enuf for most so i bought the s4!
actually i wanted the s4 when i first bought the a4, but it was unclear when it would be in the states. unfortunately only 9 months after my purchase!

But does that mean the 1.8T is not as reliable? Or does it mean that most people with the engine have only had their cars for 4 - 5 years or fewer and people just haven't gotten up there yet?
I agree that intuitively a 6 should last longer than a 4, but have there been many stories of failed 1.8T's? Are they not reaching 150k+ miles because they're failing or just because they're fairly new and haven't had the mileage on them?
