Are there any problems with 1999 MkIV Golfs and Jettas?

I'm thinking about getting a '99 Golf or Jetta. Are there any first-run MkIV reliability issues? And which is lighter - the four-door Golf or Jetta? How hard is it to make the 2.0L powerful enough that it is not a "safety issue" which I have heard from some - it has no "get the hell out of that truck's way" power.

the 2.0 does alright, i have no problem geting around trucks, as long as you don't mind dropping gears. ie 5th to 4th.

I had a 99.5 and I bought it early on 01/99. That car was a POS compared to my new one. It was totaled in an accident and then I went and bought a '00. I've had a lot less problems with the 2000 then I did with the 99.5.
