Im slowly finding strange stuff that gives me an idea of what the previous owner of my A2 was up to before he/she sold it.
So far, I know it was broken into, hence the scratches and dings by the doorhandle on the drivers door...

When I first took the back seats out, i found some heavy gauge
speaker wire, so prolly a big sub setup in the trunk, more than likely a sub in the back was related to the break in marks on the door.
At first, the hatch rattled, more signs of bumpin bass...
A part of the rear bench latch mechanism is mangled, could be someone was trying to rip the seat down to steal a sub, before they realized that all you have to do is pull up on the knob.
The car just had overall signs of neglect, worn engine, cracked headlight, sagging headliner... curbed wheels, hole in one of the bumpers, and a little sheetmetal wrinkle under one of the rear flares.
Overall, Ive come to the conclusion that before i bought it, my car was a ghetto-ride
Prolly had one o them "Pimpin aint easy" license plate frames.

Share your A2's past if you dare...

when i was installing my tie bar in the trunk i had to take the carpet out. found a lot of glass in the edges.
also it it looked like everying touching the ignition had been replaced as if they where trying to fix something. i think i found out what later. my car started bucking like crazy and doing all kind of surging. turns out that the clip on the ecu was bad. thanks for the free new stuff

Re: Are you also finding clues of your A2's Past...?? (SauerKraut)

Un fortunatly I know my A2s past all to well but only to a point. After I Bought a car which I thought had a broken odometer inthe last month......I found a service ticket with the milage on it under the back seat IT WAS THE SAME MILAGE......guess when the ticket was dated......1997!!!!!

I was amazed by the condition of my little 8v
Driver seat had developed mold at one point and I think the car had no window at one point (bye bye carpet and seats) I took out the Ghetto rig Amp and filter system bolted to the carpet under the passenger seat..... Guess someone wanted the stereo and then couldn't find it so then busted out several windows and just took the speakers and deck!
Bad threads in front Hubs shows CHEAP service solutions (Midas or other)
My best friend the Previous owner kicked the passenger door and fender when the fuel pump went out.
I have fixed all of the above issues except the engine which will be here on monday and the paint on my tri color 86 GTI 8v Beater MACHINE!!!
YEah needs paint..the cops look at me real funny.

mine was, and is, really in lovely shape. that's why i was willing to pay a little extra for it- yet some mysteries remain. yucky sticky black stuff everywhere fingers go: 10 and 2 oclock on the wheel, wiper and signal stalks, and lightswitch. also, the telltale shards of broken shatterproof, hidden away in the many nooks and crannies our cars provide. my previous owner followed the maintanance guidelines and did'nt drive too much, but obviously was not an enthusiast. they also wore a ring and were stupid, becuase there is a deep swirly scratch on the hood from attempting to wipe something from it. they must have been fairly light, cos' the seats are okay, but liked to give rides to snackers judging by the broken cracker particles in the back seat. i guess mine are pretty lame. no bulletholes or that sort of business.

Re: Are you also finding clues of your A2's Past...?? (EbraketurnGTI)

i know mine was computer electronically coputer aligned for alignment at some shop in town yearsssss ago, sticker on the door..
i found a gold watch in the back seat area when i took out the cup holder thing for access to the trunk
candy wrappers back there, some small change..
i know under the carpet and matts there is dirt and brown small rust and dirt knowing its been leaking for years..
hmm i know its been in an accident since its cracked by the battery area on the fender.
whats odd thou is when i had my clutch done my mechanic broke my power steering reseviour and he said i had the wrong kind im like it was like that when i bought it, it was some likecylinder container... with a red circle spoked top..
the correct one is square as i have seen on many other dubs and 92's as well.
so somereason someone in the past replaced that.

I've been finding little tihng here and ther that the previous owner was a complete moron. Hence the mangled radio area wher someone tryed to put in a NEW tape deck. Not cd player, but TAPE deck. Seems they were a cheap a$$ about stuff. Like how it had original paint, and now I am doing lots of bodu work to reparin the morons idiocy. The back left are by the exhasut pipe was all banmged up, probably from backing into a curb or something. Hence, The new exhaust. Man. I really would like to se who owned the car before I did. There is one screw driven into the front bumper as if someone wanted to put a licence plate, but figured it would be too hard, so they left that/ Man. Some people...

Re: Are you also finding clues of your A2's Past...?? (SauerKraut)

As I bought my Jetta off my dad, I know its past..
In March 1985 (Still brand NEW) it was its first accident, rear ended by a ford truck at a stop light. A new right rear quarter was welded on...
It was driven to constuction sites where it would get dusty every day.. and later it would smell like my fathers coveralls..
My sister learned to Drive on it in 1992. She crashed it pretty badly shortly after she got her licence.. she was racing down a mountain and tried to go around a "Slow to 30 km/h" left hand corner at a little over 100kmh.. the right tires were peeled off the rims when it got on the shoulder and she tobogganned it on its passenger side about 50 feet into the forest.. plowing a nice little trail into the woods.. it was towed out and dropped back onto the wheels.. both right ones were folded under the car...
Surprisingly it was not written off, but VERY close. new doors, front fender, all the suspension components on the right side.. new paint.. etc..
I learned to drive on it when I turned 16 (1995)..
I then bought it the following spring when it needed new shocks, CV's, bearings, all that stuff from another Kootenay winter of abuse..
Basically it needed about 1000 dollars worth of work.. We were in the local dub shop (Allen Motors) when my dad said "Wanna buy a Jetta for 1000 bucks?"
I paid the bill and it was mine

The next year I drove it down a snowbank and parked it nose down vertically in the snow.. it was pretty cool actually.. I think my dad took pics... I had to dig it out... and clear a path to drive it the rest of the way down the bank.. it took me 6 hours .. only damage was a broken grille.
I didnt damage it again till labour day weekend 2001.. when I got nailed by a supra..
yup, thats my cars history

mine was covered in Sahara sand.......
the stuff was every where........
i know it's Sahara sand because the former owner proudly told me that the engine was very good because he had driven it to Marokko and back the month before

Re: Are you also finding clues of your A2's Past...?? (MattTheFatCat)

I bought my current car last April. 1st job, a complete cleaning. I folded up the rear seat, and there was all sort of purplish, sticky gunk under the seat. There were a few pennies stuck in it, and it had a dried candle wax consistency. I still have no idea how or what this was, as it wasn't on any of the upholstry.
The exhaust was new, but terrible. The cat was too small, with about a 2 inch diameter, which was permanently welded into a cheap aluminuzed TT exhaust. This set-up gave me all the loudness and droning w/out any of the performance. The teardrops were corroded away and their finish was cracking off. The car had been in a slight accident where they must have scraped by another car - there are scratches all along the drivers side and especially on the rear flares.

Keep em coming, this is great reading! http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Oh yeah, my buddy just bought an 87 golf a while ago, and we found a live bee when we took off one of the doorcards.
That is whack!

Oh yeah, he also has the Golf model with the ECU in the center console. Now that is some F---ed up engineering.

Previous owner put a canoe on the hood and didn't attach it properly. roof is scratched (not badly) and hood has a small dent where canoe fell.
Also, PO unravelled all wires, and they were everywhere, and frayed.

My 'Jetta Had come from Canada sent to Germany and now back in Canada, (the previous owner was in the Canadian Armed Forces).
He was the first owner and kept the origional sales receipts and every single reciept from repairs. His ex wife ripped the orginal door off of it's hinges while backing out of the garage and it was replaced with a door off of a red Jetta (it's blue but you can see the red paint through some scratches.). He must have gotten ripped off because when I was trying to touch up some rust on the bottom of the door I found out that almost the entire door was constructed of body fill.
He also must have had a dog because the inside of the speaker grilles were covered in dog hair, my best guess is it was golden retriever.

One of the Po's of my car had the car as a "boombox on wheels", thats what the guy I bought it from said. They cut out all the sheet metal behind the back seat and I think they cut out the parcel shelf (this is a Jetta). The guy I bought it from just cut this metal from another A2 jetta, cutting it a bit bigger than the holes in my car and overlayed it. There's tons of sheet metal screws poking in my trunk, I ripped my sleeping back when I packed it in there

I found monsterous speaker cables, and when I pulled out the back seat I found that felt cloth stuff they use to cover speaker boxes glued to the metal of the car.
Makes you wonder....
