ATP Turbine Housing heatshield Worth it?

From the site: "Turbine Housing Heatshield, Stainless Steel (Unpolished. Drastically reduces radient heat to protect other sensitive engine components. Easy 2 bolt install and fits all T3, T4, GT30 R style housings."
It's really worth it?

I'm wondering the same thing.
Anyone know if there is even room for this to fit behind a VR6?

That doesn't look very hard to make. A chunk of stainless pipe, and a bracket. I really wanted to get one, but now I want to make one.

If you said you want one.... Means that it's worth to get it.
ATP sell it for US$59 if you can make it for US$50 shipped I'll be all over it

If heat shields didn't do anything, do you think manufacturers would spend extra money putting them on cars? I could go thru the heat transfer equations and demonstrate the theory, but it's too hard to get it too look nice in these forums. Stainless is a bit overkill. Polishing the insides would also decrease the radiation heat loss.

Yes, I saw it at http://www.jegs.com but it cost more (US$91)

Now from these two heatshields, which one will be more efficient?

ive seenem for less just look around , the ATP one i think is just good for protecting surrounding wires and paint the one you posted would probably do a better job all around of keeping the heat in

Good god, that bag thing is fugly!
Why don't you cheap-ash punks ceramic coat your turbine housings and if that doesn't do it for ya you can go ahead and get the ATP stainless shield too (or be a real man and fab one up yourself).

The wrap will keep heat in more than ceramic coat. The wrap is more cost effective also.

I got my exhaust manifold and turbine housing ceramic coated for $215 Canadian including return shipping, tax, etc. It's not a bad price, and I got it coated with 2000ºF black satin ceramic coating.
The ceramic coating wasn't for the heat protection so much as it was to protect the manifold and housing from getting all rusted and crappy. I don't like rust

Here's a nice ceramic coat on a T76 turbo

Re: ATP Turbine Housing heatshield Worth it? (StevenT)

Ceramic coat looks great but I'm not to worried about the rust and looks. My concern is that my engine is an counter flow, so my intake manifold is on top of the exhaust manifold. The hotside of the turbo will be just below from the air intake and TB.
I looking for a solution to avoid the heat radiation from the T3 to affect my cold air.

I'm sure the bag and wrap stuff works great but it's just so damn ugly I would only use it as a last resort.
The stainless heat shield is nifty but might not fit in tight spaces. And does anbody know if it fits on turbos with internal wastegates?

Don't care, won't be able to see it since it's going to be in a Counter Flow engine.

Didn't though about that and I have an integrated wastegate....

I'll call ATP to find out

Thanks http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

i would think that the "bag" type would supress too much heat... if you want to protect sensitive wires and such, wrap the wires with something protective and throw a wrx scoop above the turbo...

afaik , keeping the heat in there better will also help to get the turbo to spool faster , it aids in scavenging , (not totally sure)
