Automotive News is claiming to have an exclusive in their confirmation this weekend that Audi now plans to build a plant in the USA. "It is totally clear that we need new production capacity in the USA. The only question is when." said company CEO Rupert Stadler in an interview.

A second source of AN also told the publication that a second plant bbuilding engines and transmissions in North America is also likely as it would increase local content and could also be shared with Volkswagen.

So what would it build an where would it be built?
Don't assume it'll be the Q3 because we show that above. The Q3 is currently built in Martorell, Spain and this first generation likely won't come Stateside anyway. We expect the Audi plant will build cars where demand is high and so are volumes. Think Q5 and A4 due to their shared MLB longitudinal matrix and maybe even the Q5-based Porsche Cajun. Then again, the next-gen A3 sedan was designed mainly for the US market and it could readily share a line with the next-generation MQB Q3 or A1. All of these transversely oriented models would share engines and (more critically) transmissions with their VW counterparts being built in Chattanooga.

As for where, Audi also hasn't revealed this but we'd guess it won't be far from existing suppliers. This leaves the Chattanooga area as quite likely, but also perhaps near other manufacturers that share suppliers with Audi.
