Audi A4 16 inch wheels and tires fit my 2000 wagon ( 15 inch stock ) straight across. VW lists 16 inch as OEM but a local chain tire store gave me some initial grief for upsizing, and then relented.

I was not dilligent in accounting for gray rings i found inside the rims which i bought used off Craigslist and have as yet to determine whether they are spacers or adapt the wheel hub " round to square " or do both. The width may be up to a qurter inch

Those don't look like an OEM Audi wheel .. if not then the ring is a hubcentric ring and is used to make the bore ID the same as the hub OD.

Thanks for clearing that up. No they're not OEM, but sold to the former owner through a popular chain tire shops as Audi compatible. The company that makes the wheels Ronal is out of business.

Similar to the 94-96 VR6 BBS wheels

Nice ride! As stated above and acknowledged by you these are not AUDI but appear to be compatible. They look a LOT LIKE the 15 inch wheels that VW was fitting on the VR6 Passat several years ago.
Cheers,

Wheel Offset

It's a good idea to get the offset as close as possible to the original value. In the case of the B5 Passat, that's 45mm. If you're fitting wheels significantly wider than normal, you may have to adjust the offset to clear the suspension components.
Say I got wheels with an offset of 40mm, is that close ENOUGH or should I get 5mm spacers as well?
