Auto-Lock and Auto-Alarm while idle?

926 Views 5 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  DCdave
I'm just wondering if the new passat is suppose to auto lock and alarm itself automatically without using the remote after you step out of the car and forget to lock it. I know some Japanese cars will auto lock and turn on the alarm after its been idle for about a minute. My car doesn't have this feature and I'm afraid that if I forget to lock my car with the remote after I walk away, somebody might steal it. Maybe its there and I just haven't waited long enough. But anyway, please let me know if your car has this feature.

Nope, it doesn't have it.
Personally, that seems like it would be kind of an irritating feature. Frankly, I'm glad my car lets ME do most of the thinking!

Thats feature would be risk also. Say you turn off the engnine and get down from the car close door and are cleaning , I wouldn't want the car to lock. May be you left your keys inside then what?? I have never seen a car which does that. I dont think any auto company wants to be liable for this. The Passat will lock itself automaticaly if you unlock the car and dont open any doors for a minute. it will rearm itself.

As I got to thinking about this a little more, the Passat DOES do these two things, however:
1. If your car is locked and armed, and you use the remote to unlock the car, but DON'T open any doors, it will automatically re-lock itself after about two minutes.
2. If your car is locked and armed, and you use the remote to release the rear hatch only, without unlocking any doors, it will automatically re-arm itself after you shut the hatch lid (signified by a short beep). At least it does this on the variants. Not sure about sedans.

Yeah, sedans do that too. Since the trunk lid doesn't pop up when you release it, the car will re-lock it after about 30 seconds or so if you don't open it.
Also with the doors as mentioned, if you unlock them but don't open them, the car will relock them in about 30 seconds.
The car will NOT lock them if you park it, shut the doors and forget to lock it, which I think is a good thing. You just need to train yourself to listen for that beep. If you didn't hear it, you didn't lock it. It will become habit before long

hmmmm... I wonder if the auto re-lock delay can be changed (from 30 seconds) using a VAG-com tool...
