I have a '94 J3 w/ 105K auto. It shifts fine from 1st to 2nd but when the car shift from 2nd to 3rd it slips to 4-5K rpm's. The major problem is when it shift from 3rd to 4th it makes a burping noise
and shifts hard.
The car drives OK and such but the tranny is driving me crazy!!

Does anyone know what it could be? Could it be a foil strip? Would synthetic help?

Re: Auto. Tranny "burping" noise in '94 2.0 J3. What is it? (MRVW01)

Rebuild transmission and replase the bonded pistons on direct and forward clutches and burned clutch plates. Use only Borg-Warner products for plates. She was often fail.

I think he's wrong.

Sounds like you need new K1 and K3 clutch packs- that will produce a slip/flare shift 2-3,
and the friction plates/piston that engage 4th are probably worn. I've seen that give a squeeking noise from 3-4th.
I don't remember how you get 4th on that one. It all depends if it's a phase 0, 1, or 2 unit.
