Auto Tranny filter & fluid change??

502 Views 6 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Porrado
Anyone out there ever changed the filter and fluid on the automatic of a 97 VR6?? I don't have a dealer close by and am thinking about doing this myself, any suggestions or tips are greatly appreciated. BTW I don't have a Bentley or Haynes for this vehicle yet, the owners manual doesn't say much. We are the second owners and it has a little over 42K on it and shifts a little weird every now and then. Thanks, J.P.

The B4 passat automatics had an electronically adaptable transmission that tries to figure out how you drive and shift accordingly. You can try resetting the electronic memory on the transmission. To do so.
- turn the car on, but don't start it
- press the gas pedal the way to the floor
- hold for a count of 12 then release
- turn the ignition off, then back on. It should shift much more readily and can be reset again at any time.
Try that first, because I don't think the tranny needs to be flushed till about 60,000 miles.

Can the auto tranny filter and fluid be changed by a DIYer on a 93 b3 VR6?

I don't believe the ATF can be changed in the VR6 transmission on account of it's a sealed transmission.

I know I got quotes as high as $350 Cdn to get the transmission fluid and filter changed, so I'm pretty sure it is possible.

The trans is a sealed unit and the fluid is a lifetime synthetic synthetic fluid that doesn't need changing along with the filter. The VW trans does not get as hot as normal transmissions so the fluid does not break down especially with a synthetic fluid. My dealer recommends to customer to change it anyways at 90K miles just as a precaution.

Actually the b4's came with a couple of different auto trannies.... the earlier ones (ones with dipstick) you could service yourself by droping the auto tranny pan etc. The newer ones like yours (97?) will probably be the dipstick-less ones and those you got to hook up to a machine and flush it....
As for the one who said that vw auto trannies do not get as hot as normal transmissions, please look and see if the transmissions has external cooling lines that go to a tranny cooler like many other cars today! For cooling the auto tranny has bloody coolant lines flowing thru the transmission. I strongly recommend that you at least change the fluid one in a while.
