Getting the wife a VW and strongly thinking TDI. She doesn't care about speed and would be happy with the 2.0, but between the 2.0s burning oil and the TDIs mileage and torque, I think it's the right choice for a little more money up front. I also think the car would be great on the highway with the smooth power delivery and low rpm's at speed.
She wants AT, and although I'm a die hard manual guy, she can have her Automatic. Does the TDI work well with the AT? We're talking mostly city driving with some highway thrown in. Will the auto kick down if needed, or are the ratios pretty well spaced?
Finally, how much is a chip for a TDI?

i don't care for the auto but her driving style might be different than mine so i would really have to advise you to let her test drive it. get yourself a stick and her the manual. i'm lucky in that my wife won't drive an auto so we have no argument in our house over this

I have an auto TDI and I love it --- I drove a manual for 15 years and I don't miss it. It 's really fun to drive and has plenty of power -Punches when you need it to and I cruise up to 70 without even trying - You both should test drive!

I am 23 and I auto TDI Golf and I like it. I find the auto a little hesitant when switching from reverse to drive, and it seems to hesitate at around 3000 rpm in second and third gear when I'm on it. It is definately an adequate transmission, I just wish the tiptronic was available when I bought mine.

Okay, we drove a Jetta TDI AT today and I'm impressed! http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif I've driven a few 2.0s and the TDI feels quicker off the line, smoother at any speed, and the extra torque is evident in roll on performance. I normally drive a 1.8T 5spd, but I really thought the TDI felt cool. What matters is my wife likes it, and I think it will hold up longer over time than a 2.0, so I'll be picking up my TDI GLS tomorrow!

Either going with Cool White or Tornado Red, Black Velour either way.

Cool Sb2rpants!
Told ya it was fun! Like I said -- I gotta watch my speed sometimes cause it loves to cruise over 70 without my knowing or trying~
Beware the evil velour - I know you've seen that complaint before. I keep squares of contact paper and a lint brush in my glove box - Pretty handy. I guess it's better the lint gets sucked OFF of your clothes rather than on....
Fill us in on the color -
She's also gonna LOVE filling that tank ~ hardly ever!

Looks like we've decided on Cool White. Now trying to decide between lint magnet black velour and beige leather pkg. I like the leather because it's got heated seats and wont get full of lint. But I'm concerned that leather will be hot in my AZ summers, even compared to black velour.
I thought about saving some money and getting her a 2.0, (she could care less what engine is under the hood as long as it goes when you put it in 'D') but maybe I'll be happier long-term with a TDI.

Get the TDI!!! If you're looking for engine longevity...read what others say about THAT one! Diesel, no doubt.
Go leather. If you have a choice.....GO LEATHER! I'm not exaggerating about the lint problem....it's incredible.
Leather gets hot in AZ, though......
