Hi guys and gals, this is the first time I posted here, since other forums didn't have any reply at all.
This is SERIOUS. I tried very effort, but no luck.
OK, my 94 Golf GL trany stucks at lower gears occasionally. It happens after driven a fair distance (like over 20kms or so) When speed down to about 60km/h, the 2nd gear suddenly kicks in & no matter how high the rev, speed, it just stucks there. Then, it gets fine again after 2kms or so.
I drained the trany oil out, new oil & level is perfect. Not too much, not too little. Took the oil sump out as well, the solenoids look fine. Even checked the TCM under the seat, unplugged it and plugged it again. BUT, problem still occurs.

Hey guys, I am desperate to get this sort out. This problem has been with me for more than one year! Nobody in my country seems know much about VW trans.
Any reply is much appreciated.

Change the filter too?
One thing that worked for me when I had sort of the same problem was a different fluid. I tried Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF. Between cleaning and that my problem has gone away.

Re: auto trany stuck at low gears (Mjollnir)

Thx for replying. Yeah, the fluid was changed last month. The oil I
used was factory Mercedes'. So, it should be pretty good oil. The
filter (screen) was changed as well. Mind you, the original filter was
on there since 94. So, the stupid dealer simply not do anything to it
within warranty. (i wasn't the owner that time of course)
So, do you have any more idea? You think the gearbox cooling
radiator (just on top on the gearbox) stuck or something causing
overheat? I even took out the TCM lastnite, everything looks sweet
inside out. Any idea is much appreciated.

When/if you find out let me know I have an '84 A1 that does the same thing, along with other goofy things.
Going along fine then into 2nd even at freeway speeds ,,,,it always did want to take forever to upshift to 3rd, not higher speed than normal but the transition time between gears, and wants to "hunt" between 2nd and 3rd.
Anyone out there ever played with the pressure settings on the valve body ?

Re: auto trany stuck at low gears (Dr Don Madbug's Dad)

Thanks for replying. yeah, I heard people said the throttle body itself
maybe out of adjustment. Can you teach me how to rectify this? I
think the mechanic did something at there as well, in order to loose
the tension. But, I also want to know how you do that. I also tried
that "hold the accelarate pedal for ten secs, turn the agnition key to
"on", hold it ten secs, then turn the ignition key to "off" method. It
seems help, I tried it on the road while that gear stucking happened
yesterday, it's backed to normal afterwards. PROBLEM IS why it's
stucking. It must have some cause. I want to find that out, rather
than risking have this problem whenever it wants to.
Can you help me out on this?

Dear Dr, can you teach me how to re-adjust the throttle body? anything could
be done to it avoiding such problem? do you think the valve body
maybe to blame? problem is there isn't any code on it.

Re: auto trany stuck at low gears (Mjollnir)

Really? why Synthetic ATF should cure the problem? would you be
so kind explaining? You know, the oil was brend new, so does the
filter. Do you think ambient temperature maybe to blame? It's been
really sticking hot out there recently. I also notice that during cooler
season, the transmission was quite alright.
