User manual states that with the dealer activated automated locking at 10mph, "the vehicle will automatically unlock when you remove the key from the ignition lock." Not happening. Car locks fine at 10mph (which is annoying), but every time I get out to get something out of the back doors, everythings locked
. Broken or am I missing something big?
Does a dealership charge to turn this off (when it is working)? What do you guys think of the feature?

Re: Automatic Locking - problem? (wrighla)

I don't know how it's *supposed* to work, but the driver and passenger are able to get out when the car's stopped. When they pull the lever to get out, their doors unlock. The back seats don't unlock unless you hit the unlock button.
I have to say that I really appreciate the auto lock feature - much safer that way. And the only time it is a complete nuisance is when I have people in the back trying to get out. If I'm in the mood, I hit the switch.

On the other hand, even the backdoor feature makes sense for a "family car." The kids can't get out until you allow them to. Keeps them from running out into traffic, I suppose.
Aimless thoughts on your topic...

This needs to be programmed by the dealer using a VAG-COM. As i understand, this should have been checked during the pre-delivery inspection.

When you picked up the car from the dealership, they should have asked you how you wanted your auto-lock feature to operate. Like many of us, you were not asked. The dealership might try to charge you for the service of setting your auto-lock feature, but you can point out that they are supposed to do that as part of their normal Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI).
wrighla, you can have it the way you want. The feature set is there for the technician to select using the VAG-Com.
btw, The rear doors can be opened just like the front doors, but you have to pull on the handle twice... unless a child-safety feature is used, or if the driver unlocks all the doors from the armrest button console.

Why would you want the doors to unlock? When you stop the car, pull out the key, and lift the handle, don't the doors open? You don't need to unlock them first. Having them locked when you stop the car is safer (at least for me). If you want them to unlock, just have your dealer set it up that way.

Re: Automatic Locking - problem? (VW Fanatic)

the scenario is when I go to work each day and throw my laptop bag in the back seat. I drive to work, the doors lock the first time I hit 10mph. I get to work, turn the car off, take the key out (no doors unlock), open my door using the inside handle, close my door (from the outside), then try to open rear door (using outside handle), but can't because its locked from the 10mph thing.
I do certainly see the pluses of the auto locking especially when my 4 year old tried to open the door on the way home from the dealership. That and the fact the child lock was enabled kept us safe though.

My doors lock at 10mph. They do not unlock when i remove the key. The front doors open when you pull the handle (as documented in manual). The back doors open when you pull the handle twice (as documented in the manual - and also a child safety feature). I am happy with how it all works.

Instead of a laptop, I usually have my kids back there. Having the auto-unlock is something I really appreciate because it saves me from having to remember to push that little button everytime I get out of the car.

I have a 98..
At 10 mph all doors lock.
When I turn the engine off and remove the key, all 4 doors unlock, regardless of how the childproof device for the rears is set.

The 1998's are a bit different because the auto lock/unlock could not be programmed independently of each other. The codes changed in 1999 so that you could have both or either/or.
I should also add that I have two toddlers so there's no chance of them opening the doors themselves.

Re: Automatic Locking - problem? (wrighla)

I had my car reprogrammed to auto-unlock during my 10k service. Now when I take out the key, the people in the back don't yell, "Hey this door won't open," anymore.
Pure bliss.

P.S. Dealer didn't charge me anything... but the did forget to rotate my tires. I wonder what else they forgot.... or ignored...

I wonder sometimes if people read the manual or the above posts. The back doors open (when locked) by pulling on the handle TWICE. My guess is that it's meant to frustrate little people from actually opening the door on their own. Now if your adult friends are being frustrated as well, what can I say...

None of my doors unlock when the key is taken out of the ignition... I suppose that it would be nice to have this feature. But, you must realize that if in an area where some unsrupulous individual(s) wish to gain entry to your car, having that unlock feature when the key is removed from the ignition could make it that much easier for them.

You have to get out of the car eventually, don't you? You unlock the doors when it's safe. Why would it be any different if wait until it's safe to remove the key from the ignition

That feature was not implemented until the 2000 model year (and is not explained correctly in the older user manuals anyway).
Besides, I don't require all my passengers to read and memorize the owner's manual before they ride in my car
.
