Re: AWD or no, what do you think? (Rensselaer Corrado)

I've been wondering the same thing lately. Does anyone have any information or links to technical info on the syncro system?
Re: AWD or no, what do you think? (HisMajesty)

Brian Jowett did the conversion several years ago. I wonder if you can adapt the TT's Haldex system instead. . .
Re: AWD or no, what do you think? (HisMajesty)

well i was talking with mike at gruven today on this
he said no don't eve bother with it its adding like 800 lbs more
sucking up more HP to run it so i'll be loosing hp and adding masive punds
Re: AWD or no, what do you think? (yello90g60)

No way would it add 800lb. You get AWD and a more sophisticated rear suspension. You just need to replace the rear floor pan of the car. Basically a direct weld in. It also doesn't suck up power because it is only engaged when the front wheels are spinning.

poop.......

Not even close to 800lbs. I can pick up the whole rear suspension/diff assembly. Granted only 3 inches off the ground and it takes all that I have. But no 800 that I'm sure of. You wont need the rear pan of a Rallye unless you want the stock look. Fuel cells are bas ass. It's a bolt in affair with a tad bit of welding but rather simple (labor intensive in some ways and you must cut your car up). When I say cut up its bye bye to the spare's hole, easy and cheap just to cover up the hole with sheet metal and make a mount for the fuel cell I was talking about. Is it worth it? Not when Audi cars are around, but if you want a Corrado that can do nasty all-wheel burn out's then you get that second job you never wanted.

awd? or fwd?.....i'll stick with my front left power wheel!...lol!

Re: AWD or no, what do you think? (G60RRADO)

So what do you need to make it work?
-the Synchro tranny
-the rear diff assembly
-a new fuel tank (cell or rallye tank)
-different exhaust downpipe, right?
-do you need a syncro rear axle?
-anything else?
Re: AWD or no, what do you think? (CorradoFANATIC)

-does anyone know if the golf 90hp synchros in germany have a weaker drivetrain than the g60 synchro passat or golf g60 rallye synchro?
will a wrecked passat g60 or golf rallye have all the needed bits?
Re: AWD or no, what do you think? (CorradoFANATIC)

you will also need a cutting torch and alot of confidence
Re: AWD or no, what do you think? (CorradoFANATIC)

Passat G60 for sure will work fine, same with probably the Rallye Golf. Don't know about the other two.
Re: AWD or no, what do you think? (CorradoFANATIC)

The earlier Golf syncros (with the 1.8l motor) do have a different drivetrain than the G60/Rallye/Mk3 syncro cars. These three use a o2A tranny and a stronger rear diff to keep up with the power of the G60/VR6 motors that came standard with them.
Brian Jowett and Cullen probably know alot more about this than I do, but I've been researching it quite a bit. It's $$ no matter what way you do it. Here's what you need:
02A Syncro trans/bellhousing, center driveshaft, rear diff housing, rear drive axles, rear suspension arms, rear spindles and carriers. A way to get the fuel tank out of the way, and mod the rear pan. Dual downpipe and full dual exhaust (to clear the center shaft).
Luckily the Corrado got the same tall center tunnel as the Rallye so you only have to worry about the rear section of the floor pan instead of the whole thing like on an Mk2.
Good luck.

Re: AWD or no, what do you think? (need_a_VR6)

In germany you can get a complete passat g60 syncro for around $2000, complete, not wrecked or anything.
If you have a G60, you then have an extra engine and G-lader, in addition to all the syncro bits, right?
I might take a drive down to germany this winter then...

Can you use the passat fuel tank?
Does the rear suspension and tank bolt right up to the Corrado (if you remove the spare wheel well)?

Re: AWD or no, what do you think? (CorradoFANATIC)

no it doesnt bolt right up it requires some cutting and some welding
Re: AWD or no, what do you think? (brilliantyellowg60)

from what i hear, getting a golf rallye or passat g60 syncro is worthless...only 5% of the pwer is transferred to the Rear and it adds so much weight, with only 5% going to the rear, whats the point? now an Audi TT AWD system, that would be nice, there is a guy in texas who has an A2 GTi with the 225HP 1.8T, 6-Speed and AWD all out a TT in his car, selling it for 25grand though, the car already built and driven hard.
Re: AWD or no, what do you think? (a2a4raddo)

awd kicks ass if you are into twisties, but will reduce your drag racing performance. You'll waste clutches quick too.
Re: AWD or no, what do you think? (Rensselaer Corrado)

If you've got 300 hp, then go for it. otherwise just go for a limited slip.

The Synchro system can achieve a 90+% lockup between front and rear axles. The Haldex can achieve 100% lockup and reacts faster.
Both systems transfer no power to the rear wheels as long as the fronts aren't spinning faster than the rears. When they do spin faster, the Synchro engages because it is filled with a fluid that hardens when shear forces are applied to it, locking the front and rear axles together. The Haldex locks because a computer figures out the front wheels are spinning and actuates a hydraulic ram that pushes the clutch plates in the Haldex diff together to lock the front and rear wheels.
Trust me, the Syncro AWD works damn well.

Re: AWD or no, what do you think? (Rob)

well, planning on putting in a supercharger and almost any other mod you can think of (which is going to take forever financially). i would be auto xing the car tho. now that you guys have that added insight, what is your opinion. thanks
