AWW Engine HP definition....???? Please read.

VW Power (display until 1/22/02) edition has something that I found of interest and something that I would like confirmation of. The article " Scream Therapy" by Peter Wu states the following on page 63, 3rd paragraph:
"Starting with the 170 hp AWW engine and adding the chip is good for 210 hp."
Really?????
The AWW engine is rated at 170 hp?!?! I purchased my GTI thinking that it was 150. I know that I have a AWW engine so does this mean that I am running 170 hp and that it is "listed" as 150 by VW marketing??
If anyone hase some clarification on this matter it would be greatly appreciated. If I follow what Peter Wu is saying.... I have a 170 hp engine (I am assuming at the flywheel). So do all of you running with the AWW!!! That is assuming that Peter Wu is correct

Maybe everyone knows this already and I am just lagging behind in the world of information

nah must be a typo..infact in an earlier issue of VW power (Fall 2000) they issued a lil apology in the editorial section about the fact they may have started some rumors about the 170 hp gti's and jetta's..and since vw power is a compilation of older mags, including european car and a few others, it may be an older article you are reading...
so in conclusion...the AWW is rated at and has 150hp :-D which sucks cause i could use 20 extra hp

sorry, but the truth must be known
but on the up side, the AWW has a hybrid K03/K04 turbo (the compressor side is K04) so when chipped it makes good power. UPsolute reports hp in the mid 180's and torque around 210 at the wheels with their chip, not bad my friend. add exhaust and CAI...and she will fly

That is good to hear. Not sure what Chip I am going to go with but that is half the fun right? Deciding what to get...

The AWW shows around 140bhp on the dyno. So personally I think the AWW can do better than just 150hp. The 0-60 result is pretty close to VR6 as well. For marketing reasons, VW/Audi claims that the AWW produces 150hp. Otherwise it will be to close to the 2.8L V6 and VR6. That's just what I think but can't find any evidence.

I just dyno'ed my AWW 1.8T and at the wheels it has 137 hp and 147 lb/tq... and the manufacturers claims are at the wheels. If you assume a 15% drivetrain loss, at the crank my car would have 161 hp and 170 lb/tq... And my car is pretty much stock in terms of power.
Hope this helps... http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Maybe the article I quoted contains your evidence
...not sure though. I think that I should just get mine dyno'd and see what she does. I am at altitude as well. That should not make much difference as the turbo will spool up until there is enough air but it would explain why I am able to pull on the VR6s around here... as well as the Audi A4 - both 2.late and 1.8t.
It just feels as though my GTI is extremely strong for stock. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

No problem... I've been looking for a chance to post the numbers since I got them last week

It's a good baseline for future mods to my car...

Re: AWW Engine HP definition....???? Please read. (JerBer)

OK, here is a thought.
1.8 20 valve engine in Europe produces 125 hp. Do you think addition of a turbo increased 1.8t engine's output to only 150?
This is why when you chip 1.8t you get around 190-200 hp out of it (which is the number you should get out of 1.8 engine with turbo), but VW also sells VR6 which has less output than chipped 1.8t. So, my thought is output of 1.8t (especially AWD) is low for that reason, even though it's capable of more (like mentioned 190-200 hp).
Re: AWW Engine HP definition....???? Please read. (euro_vw)

what is the Diference between AWW and AWD, or whatever it is?

ECU and some other stuff.
There is also AWP now (the one that is 180 hp)

There is another thread on the 1.8T forum : http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=158704
This one has one AWW dynoing at 144 hp/ 159 tq. Then there is an AWD thats putting out 148.5/160. Thats 174/188 at the crank???
So assuming that all 1.8T's off the assembly line will show a +/- 10 hp variation, are we looking at 161-174 hps at the crank for the 1.8T in reality??
